Sharing a rope while climbing rocky mountains...
Doylenf6 September 2008
Pete Smith narrates this B&W MGM short about climbers in Southern California climbing Tahquitz Rock (Lily Rock) above Idyllwild.

Two teams make the trip to the top; the first team does it the efficient way, but even then there are some dangerous slips and falls that are deterred by the strong ropes; the second team is strictly for laughs as one of the climbers keeps getting tangled up in his own gear.

Either way, it's not easy to understand what makes these climbers tick unless you happen to be a climber yourself. The rugged terrain is jagged enough to make anyone think twice about it.

However, these members of the Sierra Club are rock climbers. They see a mountain and they have to climb it.

Summing up: Passes the time quickly with a few thrills and laughs along the way.

Climbing Over Rocky Mountains
boblipton2 June 2019
Well, if not the Rockies, then at least a Rock: Tahquitz Rock to be exact. A Smith called Pete takes us along with a trio as they go rock climbing in this documentary shot by Willard Van Der Veer, a venturesome cameraman who shot WITH BYRD AT THE SOUTH POLE and episodes of the TV western CHEYENNE.

That was about thirty years later. In the meantime, this is a pretty good short about the state of rock climbing in the year it was released. There are a few sequences that are obviously staged - no one falls accidentally when there just happens to be a high-speed camera placed in a crevasse that miraculously captures the plunge from the best angle. Still, it's a fun short.

Pete Smith doesn't turn the snark up very high on this one. That's reserved for safe activities.

Three on a Rope (1938)

*** (out of 4)

Entertaining Pete Smith short from MGM takes a look at three rock climbers and the various techniques they use to keep from being killed. The Smith shorts are all hit and miss but this one here is one of the good entries in the series. Fans of rock climbing will probably get a lot of entertainment but even those non-fans should enjoy this. We get some pretty good cinematography as we go along with the three climbers but we also get a good lesson on the various things used to keep them safe. Smith's narration is mainly used for wisecracks and he actually has a couple pretty good ones here including one involving a friend from the Bronx who comes to climb. This was apparently shot at the Lily Rock in Southern California and this makes for some great scenery.

Some people think they are funny. In the old days the seem to be definitely the case. This movie is pleasant to see, but not that superb
