Alice Takes The Lead
boblipton13 March 2019
Alice Howell auditions for the L-KO Film Company. "I'll play leading roles or be a janitor!" she offers, so they hand her a broom. She becomes friendly with fellow janitor Raymond Griffith -- in a top hat and wearing a mustache! -- who is happy with his lot in life.

Only the second half of this two-reeler is known to survive and it appears on the newly issued THE ALICE HOWELL COLLECTION, but it offers a complete story in itself. Miss Howell has been promoted from supporting comedienne to lead, and her husband, Dick Smith appears -- a bit of lagniappe. However, when director John Blystone tries to humanize the monsters that appeared in earlier L-KOs, they become dull, with little interesting comedy. It all ends in a chase with dynamite, of course. Fans of old Warner Brothers cartoons may wonder where they got all the dynamite and anvils they kept dropping on their 'toons. Acme bought them up from L-KO.
