costumed players

TravelTalks goes to Mexico. First, it's a vacation home on Lake Chapala. The pottery looks unusual. I've never seen designs like those. They are certainly using all the colors. This episode seems intent on using as many colors as possible. It's all very touristy and manufactured. It's the war years and the show tries to stay close to home. That doesn't mean that it couldn't do something authentic. This is a lot of costumed players doing their song and dance. The pole dance is impressive and it's noteworthy that they would probably do it safer today. This one is very old style.

Here We Go Again

This James Fitzpatrick Traveltalk for MGM takes the audience on a brief survey of some of the tourist spots of Mexico. It was a favorite destination for the series, undoubtedly because it was not far from Los Angeles; it probably cost less to send the camera crew under Wilfred Cline there than a thousand miles to Minnesota. This is one of a baker's dozen of Fitzpatrick's films set in that country -- if you count his later series for Paramount.

Perhaps that is why Fitzpatrick's narration is less bombastic and annoying than usual. He still covers standard tourist spots, like the Bandero Monument, and Lake Chapala with its magnificent waterfall, as well as some native customs intended to show off Technicolor. Too bad the print on TCM is not as clear as it might be.

Glimpses of Mexico (1940)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

Another entry in MGM's TravelTalks series with James A. FitzPatrick. This time out we visit Mexico, which was a popular destination for this series since it traveled there many times. This time we get to see the Bandero Monument, which was built to highlight the countries flag. Also see are Lake Chapala, Rio Grande art, music and romance. Also on hand is some pole dancing from Ancient Indians. If you've seen one entry then you know what to expect but this is another winner that manages to show off some great sites and make one want to travel there. A strange bit of news considering Turner Classic Movies just happened to schedule this just as the Swine Flu news struck fears of Mexico.
