Argghh! Garbage!!!
DrDoom6712 May 2005
I work at the video store that rents this video in Lexington and I must say...it should have never been made. I even know some of the people who worked on it who regret doing so. Bad effects, horrid acting, bad script especially. I swear the dialog wouldn't have passed for the original PSX Resident Evil; it's that bad. If you want to know how not to make a movie, watch this film to learn a thing or two. If not, don't waste your time. And even the director know it sucks because he keeps coming in to try to get us to upsale the movie. No sir. I've watched two-thirds of the horror section and this rates even lower than Plan 9 from Outer Space. Even Ed Eood would have said, "Nope. That's too stupid even for me."

Disappointed

Once a month, I invite a few friends over for a "Retarded Movie Night". We look forward to movies that are either so bad they're funny or movies that know they don't have a plot and just show a lot of chests. Last night, we were unfortunate enough to have Zombie Planet as one of our movies. The cinematography is on par with what we're used to, but the acting was a different story. The lead role is played by a Johnny Depp/Rob Zombie wanna-be who couldn't get a role in a high school play, let alone a LOW-BUDGET horror film. Our indecisive hero, who couldn't tell whether or not he wanted to be a bad-ass this scene or a whimpering coward was one of the reasons why this was the first movie of 30 that I have ever had to stop early during a Retarded Movie Night. It had the possibility for greatness with a GREAT twist on the standard zombie infection, but they took it an entirely different direction based on Johnny Zombie. I personally would not recommend this to any of my friends. However, it's unfortunate that I already invited a few over last night to suffer through 80% of this movie with me.

The Worst Horror Movie...Ever!
Metapharstic22 March 2005
I live and work in Lexington, Kentucky, the town where Zombie Planet was filmed. I'd heard about the film forever ago, from various people who claimed to be a critical part of the production. Then, for several years, I heard absolutely nothing. Imagine my surprise when I found it sitting all by itself at the local video store, just itching for a rental. So, being the cinephile that I am, I decided to give these local filmmakers a shot.

Bad idea.

Zombie Planet is overlong, boring, poorly acted, miserably shot -- and that's just the good stuff. I tried my hardest to enjoy it, which included removing my brain and setting it on the table so that it wouldn't get in the way of the horrible storyline. Alas, nothing worked. Zombie Planet is so bad it's pathetic. And the very idea that they're planning a sequel leads me to believe that the director and his henchmen have listened to none of the criticisms I'm sure they've heard. Move on, you guys. Please. In fact, refrain from film-making altogether. Or attend a few classes on pacing, storytelling, and, well, basic direction.

Otherwise, for the love of God, hang it up.

Worst Zombie Movie ever.
only_myschly8 September 2006
Now, I'm a big fan of Zombie movies. I admit Zombie movies usually aren't all that good, but I like them anyways. Despite the crappy acting and worthless dialogues that occur in almost all Zombie movies, this one is by far the worst. See, there are a few ground rules with zombie-movies. 1. Zombies are suicidal. Tactics is seldom used, and NEVER do they act like a boxer. They don't dodge a blow to the head, they take it with a ugly smile. They don't try and hit you in the face, they grab a hold of your arm and bite it! 2. Zombies can't speak. Only in Evil Dead. Otherwise, they DO NOT SPEAK. 3. You don't fight zombies with melee-ranged weapons. You loose in a melee fight against zombies. Firearms are used. In this movie however, melee is the way to go, which is wrong. Very wrong.

It had NO redeeming qualities.

If you wish to see a Zombie movie, see one with an average score higher than 3 on IMDb.com

Not that bad!
joconnor822 January 2006
Come on everyone, this is a B movie. Of course the acting is well, eh!; but the story isn't that bad. The zombie effects were pretty cool for a low budget film. It's a little long but most B movies are too short and it was a nice change. It kept me interested most of the time. Hopefully the sequel will be a little better. I saw the trailer for the sequel so I guess there will be one. And please remember this is from Tempe video so you should know before hand that you are dealing with low budgets and so-so acting anyway. Also with all the zombie movies out there, it was a pretty original idea of why and how it got started. Overall I would have to give this film a thumbs up!

Stop the planet, I want to get off!
BA_Harrison9 September 2008
Just when you think that you've seen the worst the zombie sub-genre can offer, along comes another budding Romero and his team of no-talent mates to prove you wrong.

I've suffered the Zombie Bloodbath trilogy, endured Death Valley: The Revenge of Bloody Bill, sat semi-comatose through The Zombie Diaries, and laughed hysterically during Zombie '90: Extreme Pestilence, and genuinely thought that amateur movie-making could sink no lower. However, having just watched Zombie Planet, a two hour long festering pile of drivel from writer/director George Bonilla, I think I have found the ultimate in awful zombie movies.

In this dreadfully amateurish effort, which is part Mad Max and part Dawn of the Dead (but ALL bad), Frank Farhat stars as T. K. Kane, a tough fighter who kicks zombie ass for a hobby, armed only with knives, a machete, some concussion grenades, and what he obviously perceives to be a really mean glare.

After a desperately unexciting opening sequence in which he takes on a horde of dodgy looking zombies, Kane teams up with a group of survivors who not only have to fend off attacks from the undead, but must also must placate a gang of vicious thugs who have taken control of the area (by searching for and handing over any valuables that they find).

Of course, Kane isn't the type of man to take orders from a bunch of z-grade post-apocalyptic bully boys, and he sets about teaching the bad guys a lesson (mostly by glowering at them in a threatening manner), only pausing to periodically rescue pals from zombies.

Featuring awful acting from almost everyone involved, a dreadful script, laughable effects, and shoddy production values, there is virtually nothing in this film to make it worth a watch. To be fair, I quite like the basic premise that the zombies are the unexpected result of a highly popular slimming drug that blocks cravings for carbohydrates (we learn this when one character conveniently explains the back-story to Kane, who strangely has no idea what has happened), but this is about the only vaguely interesting aspect of the whole production.

I have a certain amount of respect for anyone who manages to fund and make their own movie, but when the results are this poor, that respect is lost when they decide to make it available for public viewing. I would've kept this one under wraps if I had made it.

Warning: Spoilers
~Spoiler~

A zombie flick was practically filmed in my backyard, I know people who are in/worked on the movie, and it still escaped my knowledge. How did that happen??? I still don't know, but it hit DVD and a copy found its way into my hands. I couldn't wait to watch it so a lot of people came over and we made an event out of it. Sadly to say, we were all disappointed. It's hard to write a negative review for it because I feel like I'm rooting against the home team or something. But there are some aspects to the film that could have been drastically better. My biggest complaint is the pacing. Zombie Planet clocks in at 2 hours!! WHAT?? That's just not necessary. And the sad part is it ends with a "to be continued" feel. Where was the editor? So many scenes could have been cut down...needed to be cut down. Just fixing that alone would have made this film light years better. Most of the acting is laughable, but that's to be expected. You can't really complain a whole lot. They're all amateurs, but with so many familiar faces on the screen it's hard not to laugh. Everyone kept saying "Wow, I know that guy." or "I've seen that guy on campus." So that was equally fun and distracting. But the two main characters, Kane and Adam, did fine and that's enough to please me. Another plus is the make-up. Some of the gore is really amazing and it definitely holds up. It's probably the film's biggest strength. Too bad the zombies weren't used more. Much of the movie is backstory and talking. And that's just not what I want to see with a movie titled Zombie Planet. I want to see loads of zombie mayhem and carnage. Another strength was the plot. The zombie plague in this film was brought about due to experimental weight-loss supplements. Of course, they work a little too well and you know what happens next. This is especially effective considering the carb craze as of late. From there the film enters post-apocalyptic territory and it may have been too ambitious for the budget. Maybe the director can fix these problems in Zombie Planet 2: Adam's Revenge. And maybe I'll like the film a bit more when I get some sort of conclusion that was missing from this movie.

Please no more orange green hair
plan9-1012 April 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Set in the near future a dark stranger walks into some southern American city plagued by zombies. Settling with a group of friendly face inhabitants our stranger learns the harsh realities of city life. There are two groups of people; the upper classes who dwell safely behind the concrete walls of the city being provided by, at the right price, the state police. Then there are our friendly face inhabitants. These lower class folks live along side the zombies. There only means of survival is to trade goods, which they forage for during the day, with the police in exchange for tins of food. Our stranger discovers why his world is plague by zombies. A new dietary pill that suppressed the craving for carbohydrates was the foundation. The human race's desire to shed fat caused the down fall of society as we know it. These pills increased the desire for protein i.e. meat, even the pet poodle. However, there was one more grave side affect, after death people became reanimated with an even stronger craving for protein namely human flesh.

With what I feel is an imaginative introduction I felt that this film many realise some inventive material. What better way could explain the cause of the zombie race than by a contemporary idea of people's desire to make any sacrifice to change their body without the hard work of the gym? However, the imagination of this film soon stopped after this exposition. This film falls into the old trap of 'I can not imagine what the world will be like when society collapses'. When you watch this film you do not escape to a different world as you do when you watch Planet of the Apes (original), Alien, Mad Max or Texas Chain Saw (original). In this film the alternate society is define by people with hair dyed orange and green. Face paint and charity shop leather jackets. There is no harshness about life in this alternate society, just healthy faces and over made-up zombies. Films should allow you to escape not remind you that you need to clear out your wardrobe and take your old cloths to the charity shop.

Forget about some of the pitiful acting, or the over made-up zombies. This film fails because it is too polished, too congenial and too predictable. I have watch films like this since the early eighties. If you are going the make a film of this nature I suggest you need to watch again such films as Dawn of The Dead (original and remake), Threads or Fulci's Zombie to see and experience that feeling of desperation in a devastate society.

grow up

I think that Zombie Planet was a great film. I mean look at how well it has done. It has been released on DVD by Tempe. Tempie also said that that it had the highest pre-order count of "any" film that they have released. Now for such a "tarible" film it sure has done pretty dam good if you ask me. The film was made by a lot of first timers, they put their heart and soul into the production. The story was a great idea. Not only dose it make a interesting film, but it hits a problem that is plaguing America. Obesity. The fact that the still of diet that was used in the film is now all the rage goes to show that they hit the nail on the head with what some people will go through to look like a supermodel even if it risks their health and their life. So just back of and look at the big picture that is panted.

This is a decent "B" film
ni_nar14 June 2006
I don't know what critiquing system that the "critic" who works at the local Lexington, KY video store was judging this film by, but as a professional working in the direct-to-video industry, my vote is that Zombie Planet was a solid "B" Horror flick. Compared to the majority of horror in this market, ZP has better production values than 70% or greater of the "junk" currently available. I mean, did anybody say that "B" Horror is supposed to be a work of art? In my opinion, Zombie Planet serves its purpose; it has an entertaining, thought provoking story line, blood, gore, handsome men, and hot chicks - what else could you ask for?

The coolest zombie movie ever!
LexLutherthe2nd20 June 2005
I'm sure glad I didn't allow the naysayers from Lexington to discourage me from seeing this movie. The people from Lexington should be proud this movie was shot in their back yard. One of the things I look for in a saga such as this are heroes and villains. ZOMBIE PLANET, like the BATMAN series, has cool heroes and even cooler villains. My favorite hero: Dr. Warren played by Christopher Rose. He's the kind of hero we can all relate to. Favorite villain: Stiletto. Jon Shelton's over the top performance reminds one of a cross between Caesar Romero's Joker and Jack Nicholson's. Of course, the main villain and hero are both dynamic characters. Frank Farhat as our hero Kane has the perfect nemesis in Adam played by Matt Perry. I can't wait to see them clash in the sequel. Of course, hottest villain of all is Mari Stamper as Jamaica. I can't wait to see what she does to Kane in the sequel! Karl Lindstrom as Cowboy Frank plays the kind of character who could go either way. And who can blame him when the bad guys have it so much better than the good guys do. Rebecca Minton also turns in a sympathetic performance as Frank's suffering wife, Julie. Someone criticized her performance, but I say it's believable because Julie's emotional growth would have been stunted by such tragic events at such a young age. Each character is well portrayed by the actors. There are many subplots that are jammed into the film's two hours and I think this may overwhelm some viewers. But if you stick with it, ZOMBIE PLANET is a well acted and imaginatively produced film filled with interesting characters.Great makeup work, too! Since this is an independent film, I'm willing to overlook a few technical flaws that often go with the territory. Viva la Zombie Planet!

GOD TOOK THE LAST TRAIN OUT
nogodnomasters22 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The film is bad, but that is not to say it lacks entertainment value. Entertainment value comes from the fact the film is so badly made it is funny. First off their are really only two films. The first two films are nearly 4 hours. The third film is a 2 hour version of the first two films combined.

The film takes place in "Southern City." It was actually filmed in Lexington, which is not too southern and most likely didn't want to be associated with the film.

T.K. Kane ( Frank Farhat) is the main character. He is the "Mad Max"/ "Billy Jack" hero. He joins a group of walled in people called Dregs. They must contend with two factions: the zombies and the Upper Class.

The zombies can speak and reason. They only come out at night and stay out of sun light, except that which comes through doors and windows. The zombies were created by a protein diet supplement which causes a craving for protein, any protein except horse meat.

The Upper Class is a group of controlling psychos lead by Adam (Matthew Perry) former prison inmate. The control the Dregs and other sectors.

Kane is seeking something, he just doesn't know what. His real identity is revealed in part 2 which includes a nice recap of part 1.

Why this film is bad, but might be entertaining:

1) The sound man was terrible. The hitting sounds didn't always match the blows which never landed on the individual. The clip clop of the heels of the woman walking on the bridge doesn't match her steps.

2) the acting was horrible. Many of the cast have the same last name and are also part of the production crew.

3) The dialogue was lame.

4) Zombies engage in a fist fight. It just looked stupid.

5) CG graphics are cheap.

6) Sound track was lame. The guy who did it was also an extra.

7) The school yard bully aspect of the initial encounter with the Upper Class was cheesy.

The film teases us with some opening zombie nudity, but never repeats it. Yes, the manged to master the opening teaser, but nothing else.

This would appeal to a limited audience, most likely those who praise "Brain Dead" productions. May be too bad even for Asylum fans.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, early nude scene. 1 star for most viewers.

I like it!
batwolf1 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was very good for an indie horror film. some excellent effects for the budget. The story was very well thought out and executed. sometimes a little slow for my taste but the story moved a long. Mr Farhat was an excellent actor for the part of loner hero type. My hats off to the cast and crew of this film. I enjoyed the fight scenes. Some of the zombie effects were outstanding and some not so good but for an indie horror film I've seen much worse. Good characterization for an indie horror film also. A movie where you care about the characters is a great effort in film making. I look forward to seeing part 2 for the rest of the story. Good luck in future endeavors.

Awesome Film!
chundley81526 April 2006
I just wanted to let all of the readers on here know that Zombie Planet is a movie that is paving the way for independent horror films everywhere. The cast & crew did a wonderful job on portraying the story that The George Bonilla did so well writing. The zombie makeup was exceptional and the actors proved that Kentucky is ready for more films to be filmed in the area. I'm sure that Zombie Planet and future productions from ZP International will gain momentum in the film industry and the George Bonilla line of films will gain the acknowledgment that is deserved to them! Bonilla Rocks! Can't wait to see more from George and ZP International!
