Unsold Pilot, seemed more like a Drama than comedy
Tony Rome25 November 2005
I don't think that Dr Dan would have fared well as a comedy back in 1974, or any decade for that matter. This show was aired with 2 other unsold pilots, "Ready and Willing," with Joe Flynn and Jack Weston, and "Bobby Parker and Company," with Ted Bessell and Tom Poston. Dr Dan seemed to be a sort of family Comedy show with Cooper as a Dr with some larger problems at home. The pilot does not have much humor in it. It was not too heavy on the laugh track. The other two pilots were extremely harsh on the laugh track. This was probably a network filler for down time, in fact I caught this on the CBS late show in the 1980's. If you do get to see this pilot, check out the scene where Cooper is walking down the street. There is a gas station in the background advertising gas for $.56 cents a gallon. That is something that I, or anyone else will probably ever see anytime in the near future. This pilot is an interesting time capsule from a long gone time. Maybe a DVD will be released with some unsold TV pilots from the past. It is amazing to see the guest stars, and cast members, some on the way up, and others at the bitter end of their careers.
