Sex & Nudity

  • One stylized sex scene. Partial frontal female nudity shown. (Bare breasts are shown but not very explicitly.)
  • The members of the water polo team demonstrate an adolescent-like, promiscuous attitude towards women. Some vague sexual implications by them.
  • A man kisses a woman without her consent (he gets slapped in the face.) One implication of rape.

Violence & Gore

  • War scenes including strong, graphic, realistic violence throughout. The Soviets apply overkill to drown the Hungarian revolution in blood. Apartments, buildings are blown up or torched at random. Both armed and unarmed men and women are shown being shot by machine guns, some of them maimed or badly injured in other ways. A lot of blood is shown throughout. After such scenes dead bodies are shown lying on the streets, women and children among them.
  • The protagonists wear guns for most of the movie and use them on multiple occasions (to protect themselves and their country).

Profanity

  • Several F-words, a few of which are used in a sexual context
  • A few S-words
  • Damn, hell and other minor profanities

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Members of the water polo team are shown drinking alcoholic beverages once. (Mild.)
  • No drugs, very little smoking. (Even though the story takes place in the '50-s, "miraculously" very few people are shown smoking very infrequently.)

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The overall mood of the film is intense, depressing and bitter as it depicts a heroic, desperate, uneven and hopeless fight for freedom against an opressing superpower.
  • Extreme violence, a lot of blood and horrific injuries are shown (see violence section).
  • The female protagonist is kept in jail, she's interrogated and there's a veiled threat of torture in the air thoughout. Bruises on her face imply that she's been beaten up and possibly tortured. The acting done by the actor playing the secret police chief is very convincing and threatening.
  • Two officers of the AVH (the communist secret terror-police) are hung from a tree upside-down by their ankles; a sign next to them claims that this will happen to all members of the secret police. Slightly horroristic.

Spoilers

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The female protagonist is executed at the end. She's only shown walking towards the gallows while singing the National Anthem with other prisoners but it's still throat-wrenchingly sad and dramatic.
