Jack Always Finds A Way
ccthemovieman-112 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I never cease to be amazed at how many impossible situations Jack gets himself into, places where you think "he'll never get out of this one," but you know he always does.

In this episode, White House security chief "Aaron Pierce" (Glenn Morshower) saves the day for Jack after he's captured and delivered to the White House, of all places! We also get the main scoop out of Walt Cummings, who not only is discovered for he is, but almost gets away with totally conning this inept President Charles Logan. His wife Martha is found not to be a raving lunatic and the Prez tries to apologize but now she's pouting and looking evil. Man, some of the First Ladies in this show are brutal. I remember David Palmer's first wife, Sherrie. She was a beauty. I get the feeling Martha is going to pull some stunt, too, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, we hear some odd rant out of Cummings on why he was helping the Russians (supposedly for some misguided patriotic reasons) and he winds up helping give up information, thanks to Jack threatening to cut his eyes out. That can motivate one to talk! However, when the "good guys" go to the pier to capture the cannisters of Sentox VX1 nerve gas......it's gone! Now what's the deal?

Exhilarating

It opens quietly enough, Jack addressing past relationships with Diane and Audrey; but as soon as he tracks a lead to the White House, it's a bona fide political thriller. Walt Cummings has been a sleaze for a while, but he's gone full madman here; and throw in a spineless commander-in-chief, and the administration's in a tailspin.

Which leaves Jack strong-arming his way into this. It's not high on action, but it's enormously entertaining as the conspiracy deepens. This is quintessential "24".

Satisfying Episode

One again, there is someone inside, inside CTU and inside the White House. Of course, now that Jack knows that Cummings is the one who betrayed the President and killed Palmer, he is out for blood. The President takes action at the behest of his Chief of Staff, but things have a way of going south. Excellent episode and further evidence of the incompetence of the President.

Issues with reality spoiled it for me - great fun if you can ignore them

Warning: Spoilers
I love this series but the introduction of the 'nerve gas' holds a problem for me.

SPOILERS FOR THIS AND FUTURE They show how this nerve gas works. They show that somehow wearing a mask protects against nerve gas - stupid! mask protects against gas, not NERVE gas - it attacks through all skin, that is why it's not called just GAS. They show the progress in a video from terrorists - and state that by the time the victim reaches second stage (blood froth at mouth) the victim is irreparably brain damaged. But Jack takes off his mask (pointless as his skin is bare), hands it to a girl (who is already in second stage), runs her out of the building (the gas would still be in his nasal cavities) and brings her around with atropine administered in a very unusual way - i.e. not into the heart.

Love the series - but these episodes had me thinking WHAT? over and over - as if they just decided to not have a technical person advising them :(

There is poetic license used in many episodes but this 'nerve gas' silliness was too mush

Great series spoiled by lazy production values
