Robin becomes leader of the outlaws
Paularoc28 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This episode relates how Robin came to be the leader of the outlaws of Sherwood Forest. Robin, along with Edgar, commits his first job as an outlaw by robbing a notorious moneylender who works for the Sheriff of Nottingham. The moneylender loaned money to the poor during the winter so they could get by until the harvests. He charged them the exorbitant rate of 100 percent. Robin returns half of what they paid (i.e., the 100 percent interest paid) to the borrowers. This makes the leader of the outlaws, Will Scatlock, angry - he feels they should have kept the entire amount. This is where Robin first articulates his view of returning to the poor what is rightfully theirs. Scatlock then insists that the outlaws waylay a wine shipment; this against Robin's advice. It's a trap set by the Sheriff and thanks to Robin's skill as a fighter, the band gets away but Will Scatlock is mortally wounded. With his dying breath, he names Robin his successor as leader. Another solid episode that nicely moves the storyline along.

The Moneylender
Prismark1022 June 2020
There is nice balance of comedy and action in the second episode.

The dastardly moneylender is Herbert of Doncaster played by Leo McKern. He charges 100% interest.

Robin connives to get the information from Herbert that he hides the money in his shoe.

Once Robin has the money, he returns some of it to the borrowers. The rest of the forest dwellers are not happy with this novel approach of giving back to the poor.

Once the Sheriff of Nottingham hears about the robbery, he sets a trap. However one of the people helped by Robin comes to the rescue.

Another episode written by a blacklisted writer and the left wing subtext is clear.

In this episode Robin takes over as leader of the Sherwood Forest outlaws.

Robin 'Lends' From The Lenders
ccthemovieman-128 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The legend of Robin Hood begins to grow with this episode which shows Robin teaching the "outlaws" of Sherwood Forest the right thing to do: return to good people money that rightfully belongs to them One afternoon shortly after joining Wil Scarlet and his men of Sherwood Forest, Robin comes across a moneylender (the modern age would call this kind of a guy a "loan shark) . Robin discovers the man demands twice back what he lends people. He works for the evil Sheriff of Nottingham, of course.

Anyway, Robin makes sure the people who got screwed get their money back. Thus, we have the beginnings of Robin Hood being a hero to the common man.

This starts off a war, of sorts, with lots of action as the sheriff's men go into Sherwood to get back "their" money. In the process of the battle, the boys lose their leader, "Will Scarlet," who, with his dying breath. tells the men to now follow Robin Hood.

The episode was extremely interesting and fast-moving and is encouraging that many of the future episodes will be as well. It had a good mix of action, drama and even some humor. Alan Wheatley does an effective job as playing the bad-guy sheriff. Man, you just want to slap that sucker! Meanwhile, Richard Greene plays a likable and classy Robin.
