Murder Observed
AaronCapenBanner16 April 2015
John Hudson stars as Donald Stewart, an American visiting England who has been invited to stay at the mansion of the English lady Ellie Pelston(played by Rosemary Murphy). He is shown to his room, but is later disturbed by a heated argument in the next room between a married couple, and is shocked to the see the woman(played by Narda Onyx) murdered by her husband! Strangely though, the couple then disappear, and the confused Stewart learns that the couple haven't yet arrived, though they later do, but when no murder occurs, it seems he may have been mistaken, or just saw too far ahead in time... Effective tale with the expected end revelation.

"Being married to you embarrasses me every day, every night."

Warning: Spoilers
"One Step Beyond" fans find themselves once again in familiar territory with this story of a man (John Hudson) who intrudes on a couple having an argument about to turn deadly, and then they suddenly disappear! They show up later as newly arrived guests of hostess Ellie Pelston (Rosemary Murphy) at her English estate, completely disorienting the visiting consulate official Donald Stuart.

I don't know about you, but when I watch these purportedly 'true' stories I try to guage the way I would respond if I were in the same situation. Stuart goes a bit manic here, insisting that a murder might be about to occur. I guess you can't fault the guy for wanting to help, but how does one process any of this as it's occurring?

As he always did, series host John Newland offers theories of Stuart having a 'mental radio' that might have been tuned into an 'accident in time'. What Stuart saw actually did occur, but it wasn't until a year later that Carter Seymour killed his wife Claire in circumstances matching what Stuart described in the story. One can only watch and wonder.

A strange case of deja vu
coltras3518 May 2022
While visiting a country estate for the weekend, a man hears an argument in the room across the hall. He investigates and witnesses a man striking a woman and killing her. A few hours later, he sees the same couple at dinner.

A fairly intriguing episode that is quite eerie, and has some odd characters. The ending was predictable but well done.

Husband from Hell
Goingbegging16 September 2021
If this episode was pure fiction, it would be considered too unoriginal to see the light of day - just an ordinary time-slip story or 'déjà vu'. But it is both the strength and weakness of the One Step Beyond series that it is based on real-life events, though only indirectly. This gives the producers a licence to play tunes on the truth, which we can only guess at.

An American diplomat, Stuart, is invited to his first English country-house weekend, and is shocked to hear a loud argument in the next room. Pushing open the door, he sees a couple fighting in evening dress, the man beating the woman to death with a poker. Yet a moment later, the room is empty.

Joining the others downstairs for a drink before dinner, Stuart is astonished to see the same woman entering the room wearing the same dress, as though nothing has happened. As he quizzes her nervously and she tries to reassure him that all is well, her husband comes in, also dressed the same, and accuses her of flirting with Stuart.

Their argument continues loudly through dinner, where it is obvious that he mistrusts her and that she despises him. Both are well-cast, the wife played by the powerful Narda Onyx and her husband by Francis Bethencourt of the startling horror-film countenance.

But it is left to your programme-host John Newland, and not this reviewer, to disclose what is presumably the real-life ending, exactly a year later, when the same couple are staying in the same room, but Stuart is not among the guests. We can't tell you more, but Newland's smooth patter about mental radio waves coming round and round may or may not be just moonshine.

Here today gone tomorrow

Warning: Spoilers
****SPOILERS**** Mind blowing "One Step Beyond" episode of a man Donald Stuart, John Hudson, who while visiting England sees a murder committed and later finds the both murderer and his victim Carter & Claire Seymour, Francis Bethencourt & Norda Onyx, alive and well as guests of Ellie Pelston, Rosemary Murphy, for dinner at her mansion. As things turned out Stuart did see the future but the vision he saw and heard was far more in the future then he thought it was.

Trying to prevent a murder that was soon to happen Stuart made a complete fool of himself at Ellie's party insisting that two of the party goers were to be involved in a murder before the day is out. Try as he did to prevent it from happening the murder, that Stuart was so sure was to happen, didn't materialize! Wondering if he's lost his mind or he drank too much Stuart forgot about his vision of murder and just went on with his life.

****SPOILERS**** It took a while for Stuart to realize that he in fact was right about his prediction but when it accrued he wasn't around to prevent it from happening! Finding himself a witness on the prison's death row with Carter being given the last rites Stuart soon found out that you not only can't change the past but the future as well. And as for Stuart he now knows that he wasn't going insane but having a chance to see into the future but what that future was, in the matter of time, in fact was off by a country mile or light year.

Time Across the Hall
wes-connors8 July 2010
American John Hudson (as Donald Ainsley Stuart) arrives early for a weekend gathering at the lovely English estate of hostess Rosemary Murphy (as Ellie Pelston). After being shown to his room, Mr. Hudson overhears an argument between a married couple, in the room across the hall. Investigating, Hudson walks in on a man murdering his wife, with a handy fireplace poker. Then, suddenly, the couple disappear!

"You look as if you've seen a ghost," says Ms. Onyx, and she offers him a stiff glass of rum. Hudson drops his drink when the couple he saw arrives for the weekend. They turn out to be a part of the weekend guest list. As Hudson gets to know the quarreling couple, he wonders if the vision he saw could come true… It's all rather ordinary for a paranormal show, but Hudson essays the lead character well.

**** I Saw You Tomorrow (4/5/60) John Newland ~ John Hudson, Rosemary Murphy, Narda Onyx, Francis Bethencourt
