From Beach Party to Mayberry
jivers0119 August 2016
The only point of interest here is the re-introduction of Alberta Nelson as diner waitress Flora Malherbe. Earlier, she played a different character in "The Return of Barney Fife". She was also the enigmatic blonde biker chick in most of the Beach Party flicks with Frankie Avalon.

Goober has an overly obvious and rather pathetic crush on Flora. However, she falls for Andy in an equally unsubtle and obvious manner. She throws herself at Andy and even behaves like a stalker, following him into the woods while he's out hunting. Things turn out all right (they always do) when she finally realizes Andy is unavailable while Goober, not surprisingly, is single with no prospects.

Flora is clearly out of Goober's league, but she sees something in him anyway. Nelson is charming in the role and returned a few weeks later in "Goober's Replacement" (episode 28). In season 8 the Flora character was in "Emmett's Anniversary" (1968). Nelson was also billed as "waitress" in the Mayberry R.F.D. episode "Emmett's Retirement" (1969).

This Episode Actually Made Me Think
AudioFileZ8 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This Goober centric episode kind of made me think. What if Goober became Barney's replacement? He missed a lot of the obvious just like Barney. He had the great comedic facial expressions just like Barney. I truly believe the character "Goober" as played by Jim Lindsey became a TAGS icon, just like Barney. But, he was a bit too uneducated on purpose it seems to quite fill the role of Andy's deputy, perhaps? As it is Goober can certainly his vignettes each time. So, a Goober centered episode makes sense. To leverage this what better than an attractive girl who Goober falls for. Alberta Nelson, who was recently seen as the gal who gave Barney his groove back after losing Thelma Lou, returns as Flora, a new waitress at the dinner. Goober goes to actually dressing up mid-day and eating multiple meals just to see her. He thinks he's gaining ground which kind of goes off the rails when he convinces Andy to go to lunch with him . Flora immediately has a crush on Andy. At first things go about as one might expect...and, humorously too. Floyd does his Floyd thing spreading the news to Goober. As for Iconic characters, Floyd has become one in his own right living in a universe to himself and dispensing his hilarious diatribes mixed in with his classic stares into space using a kind of unique intonation and other worldly vibe. Gotta love Floyd! Back to the dilemma at hand, it comes to a head and Goober in a tizz wakes up to facing reality. Seems in ideallic climate of Mayberry things work a bit different. When Andy makes it clear that he has no interest and Goober adores Flora a stage is set. Goober plays uninterested to Flora in the dinner and she suddenly only has eyes for him. O. K, this isn't the world as usual, but we don't want Mayberry to be that so all is good in the end. A fun episode. It gives Goober's character his time to shine a bit too. Gotta love Goober too!

Goober's Wish List
Hitchcoc26 December 2019
Goober falls for a waitress at the Diner. But she only can come on to Andy. Of course, he is taken (for about five years now) by Helen. She really won't take a hint, so she goes into attack mode. Of course, in comes Helen, as an injured third party. Goober feels betrayed.

Delightful Alberta Nelson
vitoscotti21 July 2022
Andy could of got into an even bigger mess with braindead Goober. Flora (Alberta Nelson) steals the show. Lots of funny situations, and perfect timing in the humor. The big plate of food gag worked each time. Classic Floyd (Howard McNear) giving his pearls of wisdom. Andy was really gazing into Flora's eyes when Goober was out of the room it appeared to worry him where this thing was going. Alberta Nelson is wonderful in all her TAGS episodes. Huge mistake not making her a regular. She certainly had a comedic flair. I enjoyed the catty digs between Flora & Helen with Helen getting the beat up piece of pie flung at her. Another classic color episode.

Meh
zombiemockingbird20 August 2023
I know it's just a TV show, and it was made in the 60's, but I just dislike seeing men and women portrayed this way, even if there are people really like this. Flora is obtrusive, overbearing and pushy and won't take no for an answer, to the extent of practically stalking Andy. I just don't find it funny or particularly entertaining. Then there's Andy, who as a Sheriff, should be calm, cool, and collected, but some girl makes eyes at him and he immediately acts like a brainless goop. No one in this show ever seems to be able to tell people no with any kind of firmness. Then at the end she just switches over to fawning over Goober, who she never paid attention to before. Just irritating.
