Good Episode
sdquinn2-12 February 2010
I really enjoyed this color episode. It features almost every cast member except Emmitt Clark. It concerns an amateur talent television program. These talent programs were popular in the 50's and 60's on television. I remember Ted Mack's amateur hour being broadcast on Sunday afternoons. The shows were cheap to produce since the contestants were not paid, and received very little for winning. At any rate, Howard has an idea that he could be a comedian. He is mistaken, but that is part of the beauty of this show. Times were slower going in those days, and everyone did not have to be Jerry Seinfeld. There is a brief appearance by Tol Avery as a motorist who is passing through Mayberry. In the earlier Andy Griffith show about the woman shoplifter, Tol Avery was Mr. Weaver who owned the local department store.

Sinclair Lewis Redux

Comedy is funny unless you're the one being laughed at. The whole set of regulars (with the exception of Opie) become targets on Howard's standup. He appears on an amateur show (Sunday afternoons before football ruled everything). His button down approach is a big hit, but when he gets back to Mayberry, everyone is mad at him. Of course, we do have a silver lining coming. Opie turns out to be the most level headed character on the show. Catch the last minute!

Everything forced except "Colonel Tim Show" and viewing.

The TV show and it's viewing were terrific. Great jokes jabbing the townspeople. I enjoyed the one-man band lame entertainment. But, everything leading to and after the talent show was really strained. Aunt Bee's (Frances Bavier) giggling story telling near end was really horrendous acting. Good to see favorite Tol Avery. Very flat epilogue that's been used numerous times.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode started out just fine. The usually boring Howard shows some personality. Then on the TV show he is actually funny!! BUT then the snooty hypocrites rear their ugly heads. He didn't say anything slanderous or mean spirited. BUT the snooty hypocrites think he has insulted them by saying funny things about them. Can't they take a joke!!! BUT then they become famous and everything is ok!!! Oh by the way they all laughed at the jokes on the others by once they were the target, well then the mean attitudes comes out!!! These new episodes seem to start out fine but quickly spirals downhill!! They sure miss Barney Fife!!
