Old Style Show

Warning: Spoilers
It's kind of odd seeing this episode. For one thing, its in color and both Malcolm (Bernard Fox) and Ernest T. Bass (Howard Morris) were both primarily in the black and white episodes of the first five seasons. In fact, I believe this was Malcolm's final appearance on the show and I think Ernest T. would only make one more appearance before he too left the series until the Mayberry reunion movie in the 1980's.

A bit of life is drained out of this by the absence of Don Knotts and the substitution of Jack Burns as Howard, as is the curious idea to shoot several outdoor scenes inside on a obvious sound stage. But despite this, its still fun to see Andy try and negotiate a cease fire and stop the battle before its begun.

Two of My Least Favorite Characters

Malcolm Merryweather meet Ernest T. Bass. The point here is that they've done everything they can with these guys. One is incredibly dull and the other is like the cartoon version of the Tasmanian Devil. They butt heads hear after Andy fires Ernest for throwing rocks (or bricks). All in all, it's just not very good. I did like Floyd looking at the jobs bulletin board.

Final appearances of Howard Morris, and Bernard Fox.

Humor was a bit forced. But, certainly not a bad episode. Very zany story. Good to just see all the actors together. I always remember Ernest T Bass busting right through the fence. Liked his line, "I wish not to soil my vest". Seems like each scene was done before. But, some good fun viewing.

Two tired and done characters

TAGS was definitely out of ideas by the 6th season, and bringing Ernest T. And Malcolm back for another show was proof. These two had done their thing and this was just a sorry re-hash of these limited characters (bringing them together made no difference). Griffith was right in the first place - he should have ended the show after 5 seasons.
