The episode that --almost-- made me hate Cordy
katierose2953 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The first time I saw this episode, I was literally screaming at my television screen, "Cordelia, you evil, B*tch!" And I've always liked Cordy. It's just that I feel really protective of Angel. He's surprisingly sensitive and he never seems to get the people that he really wants most: Conner, Buffy and now Cordy. My heart just breaks for the guy. So when I see Cordy telling him that that she can never be with him because of his actions as Angelus and then watch her sleeping with his teenage son... Well, I just can't help but be enraged on Angel's behalf. Luckily, the show manages to salvage Cordy's character later on in the season and I can like her again. Honestly, this is a pretty important episode that sets up a lot of stuff. The remainder of the episodes this season mostly play out in a serial format, one leading directly into the next. Think "24" with vampires. And, like "24," "Angel" can pull of some pretty amazing cliff hangers. So if you've got the season on DVD, be prepared to watch multiple episodes at a time. You probably won't be able to stop yourself.

This episode revolves around the end of the world... Again. See there's a big rock monster called the Beast smashing it's way into LA. When Cordy has a vision of it, Conner and Team Angel try to figure out what it means. Evil apocalypse-like omens are starting all over town. Even Lilah is worried. She gives Angel a file on all the information the took out of Lorne's head. He, Wes and Gunn try and figure out what it means. Meanwhile, Fred and Gunn have been fighting and she goes to a coffee shop to get away from him. There's a earthquake and some fire from the sky. Conner and Cordy end up in the alley where Conner was born and, as they watch, the Beast rises up out of the ground. It fights Conner and tries to strangle Cordy (which sort of confuses me, given later episodes, but oh well...)Then it goes off kill a lot of people. When Team Angel tries to fight it, the Beast flattens them all. Hurt and demoralized, they go back to the Hyperion. Except for Angel, who goes to check on Conner and Cordy. Through a window, he spots them making love.

There are some good parts to this episode. I like all the phones ringing off the hook at Angel Inc., as people call in with their problems. It's fun to listen to Team Angel's one sided conversations with them. "You're number five on the 'blood oozing from walls' list. Try spritzing it with a little 409." Also, all the omens are cool. Birds flying into windows, fire pouring from the sky... And I'm glad that Gunn was the one who figured out the meaning of the files that Angel got from Lilah. Sometimes he doesn't get enough credit. And speaking of Lilah, it just doesn't get any funnier that Lilah pretending to be Fred, complete with little red glasses. Even Wes sort of smiles.

On the down side, there are rats. I hate rats and seeing them in that bathroom creeps me out. Also, I'm not really sure what Fred's deal is. Why is she mad at Gunn? Because he killed the professor guy and she wanted to do it herself or does she feel guilty that he took a life because of her or what? And like, I said, it's infuriating to hear Cordy tell poor Angel that she can't be with him because of Angelus. That's his main sore spot and when Angel sort of cringes away, I just want to deck Cordelia.

My favorite part of the episode: Team Angel fighting the Beast at that roof-top club. He just rips through them again and again. But, they keep standing up and attacking him anyway. It's just a great, dramatic scene.

Kinky dinky: Actually no kinky dinky for Fred and Gunn since supersymmetry. Schoolgirl Lilah, RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! "Keep them on", bet that's the first time he's ever said that to her! Lilah as Fred wishes that one day she'll have hips. To judge by 'Spin the Bottle' I'd say she'd prefer bigger breasts. CC and Connor also get it on. A lot of people dislike this as they think it's tantamount to incest but frankly I'm OK with it as long as they're not blood relations (fine with a girl wanting a daddy figure as long as it's not actually her daddy). Remember Connor doesn't remember CC acting as his mother and to her he's the closest thing she'll ever get to Angel (just as Spike hangs out with Joyce and Dawn because they're the closest thing he can get to Buffy) When told that snakes emerged from a part of someone's body Lorne wonders if it was just some form of sex game? When Wes suggests 'pooling resources' Gunn tells him to 'Go pool himself'.

Captain Subtext; Gunn shows an unusual interest in bathroom fittings for such a macho character.

Know the face, different character; 4

Parking garages; 6,

Guantanamo Bay; Angel tortures Gavin but you figure not as much as Lilah's going to.

Buffy characters on Angel; 16 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, The Master, Anne, Willow and Harmony

Questions and observations; Really like the way it's Gunn that figures out the symbol although it looks a bit like the cross of St Patrick to me (the red diagnols on the Union Jack). Can anyone tell me at exactly what point CC goes evil, it's never clear to me? Gunn's fear of rats reoccurs, living in abandoned buildings for so long must have been very tough for him. Really this is the end of the road for Cangel. Angel asks Wes if he's 'in' much as Doyle asks Angel if he's 'game'. Goodbye to Gunn's hubcap axe.

Marks out of 10; 9/10 some really good stuff here

I can taste the blood of all the people it's going to kill
SleepTight66625 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I can taste the blood of all the people it's going to kill - My favorite episode of ANGEL, hell, my favorite TV episode of all-time. I've seen plenty of apocalypse episodes but none gave me the feeling like the world was truly ending like this one managed to, just seeing the faces of our heroes while fire rains from the sky is just, indescribable, the end of the world? I wish. Not only was the acting and the script superb, but the camera angles were amazing, every scene seems like a part of a little movie. I think the episode had all the elements an episode should have, first of all the horror with all the animals going insane like in the bathroom scene with all those rats and then later all those sparrows crashing into the Hotel's windows. And don't forget the introduction of the most visually stunning villain i've ever seen, 'The Beast', a huge devil-looking creature made out of stone. Then you got the comedy which is going to the wonderful 'Lilah', both of her scenes were fabulous, the first one she's dressed up as 'Fred' to pleasure 'Wesley' and his nasty little fantasies - I'm good and pure and science turns me on, and-and one day if I pray hard enough and eat all my vegetables, I just might just have hips. Then her second scene with 'Angel' which made me wish for a second that they'd just make out again. The episode also had the drama, 'Cordy' (which isn't really Cordelia anymore) tells 'Angel' that she loves him but that she can't be with him (thanks for torturing the audience, you evil writers!) and then when the world is going to end, 'Cordy' sleeps with 'Connor', I know that many people were disgusted by that scene, but it's one of my favorites, not because they sex perse but because of the way it was filmed and written, it was powerful, I felt really bad for 'Connor' because once again someone was manipulating and using him, Vincent Kartheiser did a wonderful job throughout this episode. Only storyline that I didn't dig was the whole 'Gunn/Fred' drama, especially 'Fred' who is still complaining about the professor, she should get over herself already. All in all, it's always an honor to watch this episode, it's stunning and at the end of the episode I always realize why ANGEL is still my favorite show. The best scene besides the rain of fire is the fight sequence of the roof, it was utterly brilliant and probably the biggest fight they ever had. No wonder this was one of ANGEL's most expensive episodes. ANGEL: I told you we were gonna have a conversation. LILAH: Swell, but I'm having a bit of a day, so let's say we skip the usual two-step, you threaten me, I threaten you, yadda, yadda, yawn. Jump directly to the throwing you out on your thick, meaty head. 'Cause, you know what? You're not getting anything out of me this time either. ANGEL: Didn't think I would, but Gavin, he was more accommodating. LILAH: Couldn't you have at least tortured him a little bit more? ANGEL: Really wanted to, but he wouldn't start talking long enough to get into it. (10 out of 10)

Weird Love Triangle...
Samuel-Shovel18 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In "Apocalypse, Nowish", plagues and odd occurrences are popping up everywhere in the LA area foretelling the appearance of the demon from Cordy's vision. She is convinced that the world is ending and nothing can stop it. Fred is still coping with the murder of her old professor by Gunn and no longer feels comfortable around him. Cordy and Connor run into the demon but cannot stop it. Angel, Gunn, Lorne, and Wes track it down and try to kill it to no avail. Fire begins to rain down in LA apocalypse-style. Thinking this is the end, Cordy sleeps with the ever-devoted Connor as Angel pulls a Peeping Tom through window.

Gross. I do not need weird love triangle dynamics involving a son, his dad, and practically his step-mom in my vampire drama. They've been hinting at it for a while but this is the episode where it's just officially gross. I get the sentiment of "world's ending, let's just do whatever" but go find other characters to bone during the apocalypse.

The appearance of the big baddie also felt premature to the seasonal arc. I feel we needed at least a few more episodes to ratchet up the tension but it all happens very suddenly. Things are going to be weird from here on out I'm assuming...
