Do you call Barnaby Jones or an exorcist for this case?
planktonrules31 July 2021
Julie is a most unusual girl. She is a loner and she loves to read books on the occult and witchcraft. So, when Barnaby is investigating the case, he learns that this girl predicted one death...and possibly predicted a second one. This means either she's a great guesser, she is a killer, or she's in league with the Devil. Which is it? And, does Barnaby need to call in a consultation with an exorcist? Or, is there some other more logical solution?

While I found the episode a bit hard to believe, it IS entertaining and different...and I appreciate that. I also appreciate that aside from a VERY brief scene, Jedediah isn't in this one.

Interesting but predictable

Warning: Spoilers
Julie Tyler is a young girl pre or young teen. She's a reader and an outcast. Her mother runs a boarding house and her father's never been in the picture. It's small town and late 70's and it's still a stigma.

She makes predictions about the deaths of two men and they are accurate. One of the men her mother Katherine was going to marry. She also reads about witchcraft. It's not helping her standing in the community or even with her own mother. Katherine does try to defend Julie in her own way but has doubts and questions for Julie who has no easy answers. Only her favorite teacher understands but we don't get enough between them. The plot falls into place quickly it is not hard to see where it's going , who's behind it or how Julie knows ( she isn't even sure) but Barnaby figures it out. Betty joins him and helps but it's another episode where one of the main three is largely doing everything.

One character is a border and another pretends interest in reading great books to get access to the teacher's house. She is their next victim but Julie and Barnaby stop them . Barnaby and Betty take Julie home and her mother has a whole new outlook and assures Julie she is her top priority and asks for forgiveness for the things she said and thought . Julie forgives her and they thank Barnaby and Betty for their help.

One little interesting thing is one of the characters is named Sarah Proctor. John Proctor was one of the Salem Witch Trials victims and one of his daughters was named Sarah. I don't know if that was done on purpose or unintentional but Proctor isn't that common.

It would have been nice to get more of the why they did it and used Julie but I guess it's the old motive of money and they didn't mind making Julie collateral damage. They are stopped almost too easily and we don't get a more satisfying confrontation with them.

It's a good episode and entertaining but a little too predictable.

BARNABY VERSUS THE OCCULT...
tcchelsey13 March 2024
This should have been the season premier episode, it's that good. Special thanks to two dynamic writers; Mann Rubin, who also wrote for MANNIX and Robert C. Dennis, who wrote for CANNON, not to forget Alfred Hitchcock's tv show.

10 Stars.

I agree with the last reviewer, this story goes in a totally different direction. Popular juvenile actress Stacey Baldwin plays a twelve year old girl named Julie who may be a witch! Her reading of occult books has predicted the deaths of two people... and who is next?

Not to reveal too much, but you know Julie has to be mixed up with some diabolical people, and what a case for Barnaby and JR to tackle. Very interesting material, and possibly written with THE EXORCIST II in mind, starring Richard Burton and Linda Blair, released the same year, but not nearly as big of a hit as the original.

Jenny O'Hara, who is still working today, plays Katherine. O'Hara is known for MY SISTER SAM. Famous producer and director Art Hindle, also still working in Hollywood, plays Joe. Popular character actress Claudia Bryer plays Ellen. Claudia was yet another actress you saw everywhere, but often forgot her name.

Sadly, actress Claire Brennen (as Sarah) was battling cancer during the filming of this episode and passed before it was released. Claire was a staple in many tv shows in the 70s and is missed.

Filmed way out in San Dimas, CA, about 28 miles east of LA, close to Pomona, on the way to San Bernardino. The San Dimas Hotel.

Not to be missed for some excellent acting, especially Stacey Baldwin. SEASON 6 EPISODE 11 remastered.
