I don't recall if in Bonanza whether Ben Cartwright's Mexican War service was ever mentioned, but in this episode he runs into an old comrade. It's no happy reunion though, Robert Lansing was a member of the San Patricios, a group of Irish immigrant soldiers who deserted to the other side. For which he was drummed out of the army.
Wearing a growth of beard to hide the "D" branded on his cheek, Lansing with wife Anna Navarro ekes out a living as a teamster. So when a freighting company starts trying to rob the Ponderosa on a freighting deal, Lansing and Lorne Greene have need of each other.
The climax of this episode is a wagon race for a new freighting contract. Guess who wins. But it's as exciting as the chariot race in Ben-Hur.
Lansing and Navarro turn in a pair of fine guest star performances in this Bonanza story.
