''I expected more from 'The Furry Honeypot Adventure'!''
Rabical-9126 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Richie and Eddie are asked by their landlord to supervise his corner shop whilst he is in attendance at his mother's funeral. They agree, on the condition that they are paid. The power of being in charge goes to Richie's head however and after being punched by an irate young man for threatening his mother, Richie and Eddie close up the shop and decide to have a picnic ( using the stock from the shop ) up on the roof whilst watching a cricket match in a nearby field.

Things look bleak for the two however when the roof hatch door gets jammed shut, trapping the two up on the roof while thugs loot the shop...

Roger Sloman makes his debut in this hilarious episode as Mr. Harrison, the boys' belligerent landlord. He appeared once more in the show in the series two episode 'Holy'. Also appearing briefly is the late John Wells as an angry customer who Richie engages in a verbal tirade with.

'Bottom's Up' is notable also for being the first episode to see Richie and Eddie stuck in a situation where rescue seems impossible. Another thing that should be noted is that, while many sitcoms tend to be filmed on location, Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson insisted that 'Bottom' should be studio bound. Even scenes that were supposed to be outdoors were filmed in a studio set. This wasn't for budgetary reasons, Rik stated in an interview it was because ''we wanted to wholly inhabit our own world, that way we felt more comfortable beating the crap out of each other''.

Funniest bit - Richie, having boasted to Eddie about being part Red Indian, staging a war dance in order to make it rain. Far from receiving the cloudburst he expected, a passing seagull shits right in his face!

Nation of shopkeepers and jaffa cake thieves

Richie and Eddie take charge of their landlord's shop as a favour.

We get a silly parody of proud Britishness as the central characters do the usual banter, slapstick and abuse in a fairly enjoyable but in some cases forgettable episode.

The highlight for me comes about 9 minutes into the episode when Richie pretends to call the cops on an imaginary jaffa cake thief and goes through a little medley of Hollywood movie cliches. Unknown to him he's being observed by a little old lady who he then threatens to beat up after she's inquires about his sanity. This is a classic Rik Mayall moment.

The rest of the episode in my opinion is fairly mediocre, by the usual standards, but as always, comedy is matter of taste.

Those of us who have lived in Britain most of our lives and experienced British customer service might have a giggle at the superior attitude parodied by Richie as he goes into 'nation of shopkeepers' mode and gives the worst possible abuse imaginable to each customer.

Worst Episode So Far
slightlymad2225 December 2014
Worst episode of "Bottom" so far.

Plot In A Paragraph: Richie and Eddie are left in charge of their landlord Mr. Harrison's shop as Mr. Harrison leaves to attend a funeral. But Eddie decides he'd rather spend a relaxing Sunday watching a game of cricket and is not going to let this little job stop him. Richie reveals to Eddie that he is half red Indian who can predict the weather and Eddie is unsurprisingly sceptical.

Neither this reviewer or my nine year old son laughed once during this episode. And it pains me to say this as I love both Rick and Ade.

The opening credits make me laugh, just by their behaviour on the bench.

Hard to believe, but this was written by adults.

The funniest part of episode five of series one of Bottom is when Richie performs an Indian rain-dance and gets bird poo in his face instead of rain. Yes, that's the comedic highlight in this one, which doesn't say much for the rest of the show. The plot sees Richie and Eddie (Rik Mayall and Ade Edmonson) looking after the shop below their flat while the owner goes to his mother's funeral. The supposedly hilarious chaos that ensues includes Richie insulting several customers (including threatening an old lady with his fist) and becoming trapped on the roof with Eddie while the shop is looted.

The moronic humour on offer includes Eddie mistaking several family friendly videos for porn, Richie getting excited about visiting a nudist beach, and the guys insulting each other about the size of their posteriors. Trust me, the bird poo gag is the best part.
