Richie and Eddie are asked by their landlord to supervise his corner shop whilst he is in attendance at his mother's funeral. They agree, on the condition that they are paid. The power of being in charge goes to Richie's head however and after being punched by an irate young man for threatening his mother, Richie and Eddie close up the shop and decide to have a picnic ( using the stock from the shop ) up on the roof whilst watching a cricket match in a nearby field.
Things look bleak for the two however when the roof hatch door gets jammed shut, trapping the two up on the roof while thugs loot the shop...
Roger Sloman makes his debut in this hilarious episode as Mr. Harrison, the boys' belligerent landlord. He appeared once more in the show in the series two episode 'Holy'. Also appearing briefly is the late John Wells as an angry customer who Richie engages in a verbal tirade with.
'Bottom's Up' is notable also for being the first episode to see Richie and Eddie stuck in a situation where rescue seems impossible. Another thing that should be noted is that, while many sitcoms tend to be filmed on location, Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson insisted that 'Bottom' should be studio bound. Even scenes that were supposed to be outdoors were filmed in a studio set. This wasn't for budgetary reasons, Rik stated in an interview it was because ''we wanted to wholly inhabit our own world, that way we felt more comfortable beating the crap out of each other''.
Funniest bit - Richie, having boasted to Eddie about being part Red Indian, staging a war dance in order to make it rain. Far from receiving the cloudburst he expected, a passing seagull shits right in his face!
