This was one of my favorite episodes because of the overall message. It took a lot of audacity and gumption for Peter to break away from his traditional format to create this episode especially in this time period. In 1992, networks were not making Saturday morning shows or many shows talking about racism and/or Interracial dating. I remember how ground breaking it was when Angela and Shawn started dating on Boy Meets World in 1997.
Then for Peter to add the fact that the dad was against the interracial relationship was very risky business. NBC was always known to be risk adverse. That is why Jessie Spano got hooked on caffeine pills instead of something more believable.
I actually liked the original format of California Dreams with the Matt's family. I wish they would have kept it that way and maybe just added Jake. That way the show would have been different from Peter's other shows. Plus, they had the band and the story lines could have continued to be different.
