One of the better episodes

I like Checkmate!, but all too often the writers left a glaring plot hole the savvy viewer needed to overlook. Not so here, as a rich man in the oil business begins a deal which will ruin and old friend and partner. After a confrontation on Friday afternoon, the former partner only has until Monday morning to stop the deal.

After a car runs the oil tycoon off the road during an evening walk, his daughter--the lovely Madelyn Rhue (more famous for freeing Khan on a Star Trek episode) employs Checkmate! To find the assailant and protect her father's life. A shot through his office window and a bomb planted in his desk added to the tension.

Assassins everywhere

Madelyn Rhue daughter of oilman Charles Bickford brings in Checkmate to prevent her father's killing. Bickford most reluctantly accepts their help as he's a rough guy and used to taking care of himself. As he says oil is a rough business and one makes a lot of enemies along the way. He has a lot of people looking to kill him, most of all an ex-partner whom he brushed aside after a big strike played by Robert Wilke. His kids, Rhue and John Lupton aren't crazy about the old man either.

A few more suspects might have made this episode a bit better. Not like a Perry Mason story where the greatest strength of the series was the number of suspects and you had to figure out who with a lot of possibilities.

Still Bickford is his usual rugged self and that's always good.
