Send for Dick Diamond!
ShadeGrenade12 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Speed is on trial for stealing £10,000 worth of diamonds from Rossman's jeweller's shop, a crime for which he maintains his innocence. After botching his defence in court, Wolfie decides to enlist the services of private detective 'Dick Diamond'. Unfortunately, Diamond turns out to be none other than Brian Tofkin ( John Tordoff ), the deranged ex-policeman last seen in Season 3's 'Tofkin's Revenge'. Tofkin cannot even find a spoon in his office, and takes pills to 'stop him from turning into Humphrey Bogart', so Speed's chances of acquittal look remote indeed...

One of the last 'Smith' episodes to be made, this is good fun, giving us our last encounter with Tofkin, who seems to be getting progressively madder. Here he not only dresses like Bogart ( and has blow-up pictures of him on his office walls ), but also sings 'As Time Goes By' from 'Casablanca' when alone in his office.

Funniest moment - when Tofkin bungles the investigation, Wolfie tells him straight: "You certainly live up to your name!". "Diamond?", asks Tofkin. "Dick!", comes the reply.

Casablanca Was Never Like This
Prismark104 January 2022
It is the continuing misadventures of Speed. Wolfie defends Speed at court. The jury immediately finds him guilty.

Wolfie goes looking for a private detective to clear Speed's name. Speed was on trial for stealing diamonds from a jewellery shop run by Rossman.

The private detective is called Dick Diamond. He turns out to be the demented ex policeman Brian Tofkin.

Now Tofkin has become a Humphrey Bogart obsessed private eye. Tofkin is convinced that Rossman framed Speed and then collected the insurance money.

An amusing episode as Wolfie and co chase the wrong man from the jewellery shop. It is Florence who notices the sparkling dog collar.

Of course as always. Did anyone consider just how innocent is Speed?
