Daria: The Musical
Tweekums12 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
It is clear from the start that this episode is going to be a little different as we see Jake and Helen greet the new morning in song! The singing continues throughout the episode as the people of Lawndale prepare for the imminent arrival of a hurricane. As the storm approaches Daria and Jane find themselves trapped on the school roof with Kevin and Britney with Daria's parents and Trent worry about where they are.

This musical episode is an interesting idea which doesn't quite work as there is no explanation as to why people are singing and to be honest the songs aren't that great... although strangely I rather liked the fact that the singing was quite poor as the actors clearly stayed in character as they sang. As is often the case Jake provides the most laughs; his song while driving home was particularly funny. The story seemed to be somewhat thin due to the amount of time spent singing which was a pity. Over all I'd say this is a weaker episode but if you like musicals you are likely to enjoy it more.

Bold, and that's Daria

Warning: Spoilers
I wonder if this Daria musical inspired the Buffy episode, Once More with Feeling, which screened in 2001. Anyway, I appreciate the Daria writers for being bold and giving the actors an opportunity to display their singing chops to open season 3 of this fine series. Sure, the singing may not be perfect, but why should it be perfect? It's authentic!

If there was another season of Daria I would have liked a claymation episode of Daria. It's a shame Daria ended just as the Bill Clinton era wrapped up, as I would have been fascinated by Daria's take on a post-9/11 world, ISIS, the political discourse, Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and people taking photographs of their meals in restaurants.

All Singing, All Dancing Warning: Spoilers
Well, I'm not a big fan of musicals (Or musical episodes, for that matter. In my opinion, those kind of episodes sometimes could be even worse than clip shows.) but "Daria!" has its moments.

I particularly enjoyed the "Gah, Gah Dammit!" song from Jake (Which also included a clever "Speed Racer" reference) and the "Manly" song, The other songs from this chapter were just okay or simply average, in my opinion.

Now, the episode itself wasn't great (Specially compared with the rest of the series, which is pretty good) but it wasn't too bad either. I guess that it could have been much worse, since the musical format doesn't always work for every animated series. But somehow, it worked (At least at certain level) with "Daria" due the sharp contrast of the sarcastic humor from this series with the usual cheerfulness from musicals.

One of the best episodes...

A lot of people criticize this episode for being too "fanciful", but I don't think those people actually understand the genius of Daria.

That's about all I have to say, but I wouldn't want to "pad my comment with junk words", so, I'll go over the episode synopsis. The episode starts with the announcement of a hurricane advisory by the local weatherman, a spot-on caricature of Al Roker, and a rousing musical number by the Morgendorffer family.

Then we arrive in the gym, where Ms. Li announces that the big football game is cancelled, and that the hurricane advisory has been elevated to a hurricane warning. Cue the next number.

Daria and Jane, who had retreated to the roof to escape the Spirit Day festivities, become trapped on the roof with Kevin and Brittany. They retreat to a shed to escape the ensuing storm. Will they survive?

Will there be another song?

Will Daria and Tom DO IT!?

Oh wait, I don't think we've met Tom yet...oh well.

You'll either love it or you'll hate it--I know I sure hated it!

With the possible exception of the Holiday Island episode, this is by far my lest favorite episode of the series. I noticed that the other review for this particular episode was very positive, so perhaps it's one you'll either love for its novelty or you'll totally hate since it's so completely atypical of the show. What is it that I hated? Well, the episode is a musical!!! The lyrics aren't that great but the singing is truly horrendous--and it's obvious these voice actors are NOT professional singers. Heck, they could work at Guantanimo singing in order to torture the prisoners! The plot, for what it matters, is that a hurricane is approaching and may kill them all. Too bad it didn't just kill the writers! Hard to watch at best--an utter travesty at worst. And, after seeing the awfully sappy ending, all I know is that I never want to see this one again!

The only reason I gave this one a 3 is that I loved Jake's song--though I am sure it turned off many with its many obscenities. It was pretty funny.
