The Popular Kids Party
injury-654473 June 2020
A bit of a step down in quality from the first episode. This didn't have as many laughs.

You can tell at this early stage of the show many of the side characters don't yet have well formed personalities, eg Britney and Quinn's fashion club friends. The random assortment of other high schoolers at the party just seem like a blank faceless mass - which I guess is appropriate for how Daria would view them.

The idea of The brainy "unattractive" girl getting invited to hang with the cool kids isn't a particularly original idea for a story. But it's fun enough to watch Quinn be Quinn & get Tormented by Daria.

Upchuck and Trent are introduced too. We can see a diverse array of characters populating the show.

All in all it's an ok episode for a series just starting out, but it's not incredible and it's not overly funny.

The party

Warning: Spoilers
Not Peter Sellers' Party, but Brittany's one! Here Brittany (who is quite wealthy) hosts a party for select Lawndale High folk.

I especially loved the scene where Jane grabs Daria's glasses and attempts to impersonate her! Classic Daria and Jane interaction, and here you can see the bond forming:) We also meet Quinn's 3 suitors and Upchuck.

Daria's insights are quite pessimistic at times, and she wants to be left alone when she pleases, and that's fine. I wish Daria was rebooted, with her insights into millennials, 9/11 conspiracies, social media, fake Facebook news, Brexit, Trump, Sanders.

Aaaaahh!! It's Upchuck!

Warning: Spoilers
This is a very atypical sort of episode. After all, you certainly would NOT expect Daria to be invited to a party full of cool kids--or ANY sort of party! However, Brittany invites Daria in appreciation for helping her at school--and because she promised her cheerleader friends to not invite any more 'pretty girls' as they are too much competition! I just couldn't imagine this scenario....and despite this, is the episode worth seeing? However, it is a good show--mostly because Quinn also ends up at the party and it's funny to see her horror at being invited to the same party as her mega-uncool sister. In addition, further new characters are introduced and ones from episode one are being further developed. The most notable is the appearance of a typically obnoxious Upchuck--one of my favorites from the series and their 'knight in shining armor'.

All in all, a decent but generally unremarkable episode. Worth seeing--just not among the pantheon of the greats from this wonderful series.

Daria gets invited to a 'popular' party
Tweekums27 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
After Daria helps vacant cheerleader Brittany with her art Brittany returns the favour by inviting Daria to her upcoming party. Quinn has already been invited and is mortified when she learns that her 'uncool' sister has also received an invitation. Daria is unsure about whether to go but in the end she decides to. She takes her friend Jane with her; she blags her way in by claiming to be the official artist... the security guard was most impressed when he showed him the work she produced during a life drawing class! Inside the party the 'Three Js' are each trying to impress Quinn and ultimately end up fighting over her; a situation that will be repeated throughout the series. Daria and Jane find themselves being shown around by Charles Ruttheimer III; a boy who thinks he is Lawndale's answer to Valentino but in reality just comes across has creepy... hence his nickname... Upchuck!

This was a pretty funny episode that served to introduce more characters and flesh out the ones introduced in the opening episode. The highlight was the introduction of Upchuck; the sort of sleazy character who is only amusing in fiction! Although to be fair it is only his talk which is a bit too much; he doesn't overly pressure the girls. The funniest moment was when Daria told Quinn's potential suitors a very embarrassing anecdote; it was cruel but hilarious!
