"In a 20 Second Conversation, He Managed to Work in IDA LUPINO"
kgraovac26 June 2022
After the ratings-blockbuster Season Opener, CBS aired this episode next and unfortunately it isn't one of the better ones of Season 6.

The writers try to continue building Allison's character here as the script references her having the dreaded Obnoxious Personality Disorder. It's not a funny idea, and it's kind of a cop-out on why the character is so abrasive. They should have tried something else to make her quirky but here is where the seeds are sown and poor Julia Duffy was given the unenviable task of trying win over the audience with scripts such as these.

It was nice to see them address Julia's love life in the wake of Reese's death and there are a few amusing gay jokes in the mix but otherwise just an average episode.

"Julia, that's the gayest man I've met in my life."

Warning: Spoilers
"Judy Garland. Lena Horne. Madonna. Ethel Merman." That's the selection of music that Julia's boyfriend Mark (Charles Frank) has, right after Allison makes a comment about Julia dating and obviously gay man because she's not ready to get into the dating pool again, and he's safe. It's been a year since Reese's death and she's enchanted by his charm and tender nature. Alison, who has been diagnosed with "obnoxious personality disorder", is in battle with Anthony over Suzanne's house, is basically forced to serve him in order to stay, setting up an amusing battle line between them. The situation with Mark is very funny as Allison points out, he certainly has many characteristics of gay men butt is obviously TV's first metrosexual, right down to the poster of "Follies" on the wall. It's a good episode for Dixie Carter as she gets to show a softer side to Julia with her grieving and caring nature. This is one of the best episodes of the sixth season where Duffy's comedic talents are greatly utilized.
