Flipper speaks English??
wrxsti541 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the sillier and far fetched episodes. Professor Marvello, a posh sounding English ventriloquist, is ejected from a local circus for drunkenness. He proceeds to a beach where a bunch of kids are hanging out and conveniently uses Flipper, who is near the shore, as a target for his ventriloquism. Setting aside the impossibility of projecting his voice some 30 yards to a dolphin, he creates enough amazement to fund raise off the kids.

Bud and Sandy come upon the scene and resist giving funds and explain who their Dad is. As you'd expect, Bud is more gullible and Sandy more skeptical. However Marvello appears to have Flipper say that he'll come and work with him and he proceeds to persuade his old employer to have Flipper in a pool jumping with Marvello having him 'speak'. Marvello comes to the Ricks home when the boys are at the dock and finally manages to sway Sandy into thinking that Flipper has said he'll work with Marvello after further ventriloquist tricks.

Porter finds his sons all glum and they tell their Dad what's happened and he then goes out to ask Flipper who of course just answers in dolphin gibberish.

The whole scheme collapses despite the circus owner sending a truck load of thugs to capture Flipper when Bud tries to stop them and Porter and Sandy run along the beach to rescue Bud who was wrapped in a net. Marvello is contrite and changes his mind and drives off the thugs with a fake police siren.

Lots of excessive stretches of the imagination needed in this episode not the least of which is Sandy buying Marvello's story when he is normal quite skeptical about things like this.

Flipper and Bud
mitchrmp29 October 2012
This is an interesting episode. Though Bud seems convinced Flipper can talk, Bud is only half-way convinced and is easily convinced that he really can't talk. Yet Bud is imaginable enough - and young enough - that he really DOES believe the professor at face value.

Porter Ricks is quickly frustrated by Bud's imaginations and tells his children to get to their homework. Though he knows Flipper really can't talk, he still takes time out to let Bud try to prove the opposite to him. But and Flipper's relationship seems to suffer when Flipper refuses to talk to Bud when it really counts.

Of course, we see the protective daddy bear at the end when he rescues Bud and Flipper from the bad guys. We always see plenty of father-son and Bud-Flipper interaction. Though the story is a bit hard to take in, it's still a good development story of the Bud/Flipper special relationship.

One thing that gets me and is a little hard to comprehend is that the professor just happens to find Flipper's caller right near the beach and he knows it's what the boys use to call Flipper. Bud just "happened" to drop it when he got mad at Flipper. And the professor knew exactly what it was...

Another thing that got to me was the professor's sudden change of heart. It was too abrupt...

Professor Marvello and His Talking Dolphin!
wes-connors26 September 2007
John Abbott (as Professor Mavello) is fired from "Parkey's Giant Circus" - for drunkenness. The British-born ventriloquist walks to nearby Coral Key, where he uses his ventriloquism to make it seem like Flipper is speaking. Delighting Bud (Tommy Norden), Sandy (Luke Halpin), and other children, he decides on a new act - "Professor Marvello and His Talking Dolphin!" The circus man tells Sandy and Bud he wishes to take Flipper away, but the brothers refuse. Using ventriloquism, Abbott has Flipper agree to leave, saying, "Professor Marvello will take good care of me." Ricks (Brian Kelly) does not believe Flipper can talk. Abbott and some circus workers go to net Flipper; but, when Bud interrupts, they net the boy insteadÂ…

Abbott performs amicably as the ventriloquist who drinks too much, but the episode is unsatisfying. It's difficult to believe the Ricks kids believe Flipper has suddenly developed the ability to speak - especially, since the dolphin says nothing that would clarify him as the their pet. Also, the "climatic ending" does not register as a very effective plan to capture Flipper.

*** Mr. Marvello (11/14/64) Frank McDonald ~ John Abbott, Luke Halpin, Tommy Norden
