Kevin Mc Carthy particularly shines in this role of a man - a kind of good fella - on the run from the mob whom he is in debt with, and who asks help to a friend of his, gas station owner, whom he saved life during the war. Mc Carthy doesn't attract audience' sympathy though being a good looking, handsome man, but a jerk if you watch closely. Mc Carthy is so convincing in this nasty character taking advantage of his too weak friend. But the friend's wife doesn't agree to Mc Carthy's presence.
