THE GALLANT MEN: The Dogs of War 1963

"The Gallant Men" was an American television series that debuted on ABC in the fall of 1962. It followed a company of US soldiers from the Sept 1943 invasion at Salerno, and their battles up the boot of Italy. The series ran for a total of 26 episodes during 1962-63. Leading the cast is Robert McQueeney, who also narrates the story. McQueeney is a newspaper reporter who follows the company on their exploits. (Sort of an Ernie Pyle clone) The rest of the regulars are played by, William Reynolds, Robert Ridgely, Francis X Slattery, Eddie Fontaine, Roland La Starza, Roger Davis and Robert Gothie. There are the standard types sprinkled throughout, the joker, the card sharp, the loner etc. This is the 16th episode.

The company is on a little bit of rest and relaxation behind the front. The local countess has opened up her home to the American officers for a party and dinner. The countess, Dianne Foster, is however in cahoots with the German Secret Service. They plan on pulling a raid during the party to wipe out the American officers.

The Germans send several jeeps and a truck full of soldiers who speak English to do the deed. It is only a stroke of luck that two Americans on patrol tumble to the German plan. The German plot ends with a bloody shoot out with the Nazi types on the short end of the stick.

The guest star for the German team is Guy Stockwell. (Brother of Dean) Miss Foster most will recall from her roles in, DRIVE A CROOKED ROAD, THE DEEP SIX, NIGHT PASSAGE and THE VIOLENT MEN.

This one is a rather weak episode in my opinion.
