HONG KONG – The Survivor – 1961
Rod Taylor headlines this 1960-61 series as a newsman who is stationed in Hong Kong. Taylor is constantly in trouble with various shady types who are always involving him in their troubles. It usually takes several round of fisticuffs, a dead body or two and a gun battle before things get settled. This is the 16th episode.
Taylor is the sole survivor of a helicopter crash in the hills outside Hong Kong. Killed in the crash, are a husband and wife whom Taylor has known for years. They leave behind a young son, Peter Oliphant.
When he goes to see the boy, Taylor finds that the lad has been whisked away into hiding at a local monastery. It seems that the lad is the grandson of a high Communist leader. The man will stop at nothing to have the boy taken to Red China. The boy's parents had made arrangements for the boy's aunt from America, to come take the child back to the U.S. She is due to arrive by aircraft in two days.
Taylor meets a woman at the airport who fits the description. The woman, Coleen Gray, is taken to the monastery. The official in charge however refuses to turn over the boy. Gray is unable to answer several questions regarding the boy. Taylor writes it off to grief and says they will return in the morning. He books Gray into a hotel and then heads off for a talk with Lloyd Bochner. Bochner is an Inspector with the Hong Kong Police.
During their talk a cable arrives for Taylor. It says that the aunt was delayed in Japan and will arrive the next morning. What the hell? Then who was the woman Taylor had spent the day with. Both Taylor and Bochner smell a rat. A quick trip to the hotel finds that Gray has vanished. She must have been a commie agent after the boy.
Taylor and Bochner meet the morning plane and escort Jean Gillespie to the monastery. Gillespie has all the proper answers to the official, Edward Hashim's questions. The boy, Oliphant, is delivered for the trip back to the U.S.
The next morning, Taylor and Bochner are discussing the events of the last several days. Taylor suddenly realizes that something here is still wrong. The time on the cable is all wrong.
To cut to the quick, the Reds have sent two women to pretend to be the aunt. The second, Gillespie, had the proper answers to the questions asked of Colleen Gray ready to go. The Reds had snatched the real aunt, June Dayton, in Tokyo during the flight layover.
A call to the airport confirms that Gillespie and the boy never left Hong Kong. An address is soon turned up and doors are kicked. Gillespie, Gray and several Red types are soon under wraps. Threatened with 20 years in jail, Gray soon coughs up where the boy is. The Reds have the boy on a junk headed for the mainland. Gray also gives up where the real aunt, Dayton is being held in Tokyo.
A quick trip to the docks and all are quickly off in pursuit on board a Coast Guard craft. Needless to say it takes the application of violence to settle the issue. The real aunt, Dayton, is freed by a Police raid in Tokyo. She soon arrives to finally pick up the lad.
Boris Sagal again handles the directing chores. The screenplay is by Whitfield Cook. Cook is best known for writing the screenplay for Hitchcock's, STAGE FRIGHT. Cook also worked of the Hitchcock classic, STRANGERS ON A TRAIN.
