Cold War Reference
DKosty12319 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This episode reflects the times and reference to the US-USSR space race. Cosmonauts come to do a VIP tour of NASA which Tony Nelson gets volunteered to do. Then one of the Cosmo's turns out to be an attractive blonde with designs on Tony. Thanks to Roger and some bottle bungling she becomes Jeannie's Master. Things get a little whacked until Jeannie thinks of a way out of it. Tony meanwhile gets a full cold war treatment.

Just think if a real Jeannie got into the space race and here is a good example.

the script is pretty clever as Roger gets involved with the bottle but still does not know Tony's real secret yet- a 2000 year old girl friend and a puff of smoke.

Jeannie gets a new mistress

"Russian Roulette" finds Jeannie still willing to go out with Captain Healey, but gives in to her master's demands if he promises not to do the same with other women. Unfortunately, his latest assignment is to escort Russian Major Sonya Tiomkin (Arlene Martel), beautiful enough to bedazzle a helpless captain. Inside her bottle, Jeannie tags along in Roger's jacket, but he finds the bottle and gives it to Sonya. Tony is unable to recover the bottle before Sonya discovers its secret, wishing for Captain Nelson to kick both his general and Dr. Bellows. It's a race to the airport to retrieve his former genie, with a possible court martial looming over his head. Arlene Martel was still two years away from her best known role as T'Pring, bride of Spock, in STAR TREK's "Amok Time," Paul Reed serves as this episode's one shot general, and newcomer John Beck enjoys his television debut in a tiny part.

A very pleasing 1st season entry, but......

I didn't realize, before watching this episode, that the prime Guest Star would be none other than Arlene Martel, most famous in her role as T'Pring, the Vulcan on the Star Trek episode "Amok Time." In this "Jeannie" episode, she does a splendid job as a Russian with a taste for the finer things in life.

But what really stunned me was: as I watched the closing credits, Ms. Martel was the LAST actor listed. I still cannot believe that. Well, okay, perhaps the other guest stars were better known at the time? I'm not sure; however, Martel had the lion's share of screen time, with Larry Hagman alongside.

If she happened to view this episode when it first aired, she had every right to be furious! I know that I was.
