I Love 1991

Reeves & Mortimer present this look back on 1991.

Vic Reeves Big Night Out became a cult hit on Channel 4 that year. Many university students were raving about it. I was a student at the time and could not fathom it at all. Vic Reeves even managed to get a number 1 hit single.

I did like their BBC 2 show The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer. I have not even be bothered with Vic Reeves Big Night Out recent revival on BBC 4.

Ice Cream got a makeover in 1991. Haagen Dazs was sold as premium ice cream and it was very expensive. The marketing men sold ice cream as sex, it was a world away from Cornetto.

Even I once recreated the sultry scenes from the ads with a girlfriend. I felt nauseous, the ice cream went sour with the body heat. She was not impressed. It was a waste of good ice cream.

Something came out of Seattle in 1991. A band called Nirvana were singing indecipherable lyrics apart from the words Entertain Me.

The music was called Grunge and it really did change the world of rock in the 1990s. It also started a style of clothing which was co opted by the high brand fashion houses.

The year also saw the Sonic the Hedgehog v Super Mario battle for video games consoles.

Mario first featured in Donkey Kong in the early 1980s. Nintendo supersized the plumber for the NES console.

However Sega fought back with the super speedy blue Sonic who just had to catch all the gold rings.

There was no mention of Operation Desert Storm.
