Vera Miles is transported back in time to witness a murder.

"Matakitas is Coming" is a fun and spooky little chiller from the 1968 Hammer produced TV series Journey to the Unknown. The series was filmed in England with British actors and usually an American star, in this case Vera Miles. A mystery writer named June Wiley is researching the murder of a young librarian that took place in 1927 in the very library where she is conducting her research and as it happens exactly 41 years to the hour that the murder occurred. She becomes so engrossed in the material she is studying that she loses track of the time and doesn't hear the closing bell. June discovers that she is locked in the building with no one to let her out. The buildings heavy locked doors and locked and barred windows make the library just like a prison. June finds a young librarian named Tracy who has only recently joined the staff and doesn't know much more then June does about any possible escape routes. The young women admits to June that she has seen a creepy man wandering the stack areas and is terrified. June keeps hearing loud heavy footsteps echoing throughout the dark caverness hallways and spiral staircases of the Gothic building and the young librarian keeps disappearing and reappearing June attempts to telephone for help and comes to the horrifying realization that she has somehow been transported back to that September night in 1927, the night of the murder. June further realizes that all the eerie events seem to be circling around Tracy and that she must be witnessing a reenactment of the 41 year old murder with Tracy as the victim.

As a professional librarian for 35 years I have to admit that I dearly love scary library stories. I worked at two library branches that were supposed to be haunted. I have helped everyone from pimps to governor of the state. Lon Chaney said that there is nothing more frightening then a clown at midnight. Well I say that there is no place more scary then a deserted library at midnight, and I know.

Matakitas is Coming was tightly directed by the talented Michael Lindsay-Hogg who overcomes a teleplay with more holes in it then swiss cheese. I have always had a crush on Vera Miles and she comes through with a very believable performance as the lady in distress, June Wylie. Leon Lissek is a Peter Lorre type who portrays the title character Matakitas. The willowy Lyn Pinkney plays Tracy. The library building is the star of this piece, however, and it does an outstanding job!The episode was by far the best of the series.

Matakitas is a G-rated flick but its a pleasant way to spend a chilling 50 minutes. Just suspend your disbelief and enjoy the moment.

Terror & June!

Warning: Spoilers
Criminologist June Wiley is in a library researching old murder cases. She is fascinated by the case of a strange man named Matakitas, hanged in 1927 for strangling women - including a librarian. He defended himself at his trial by claiming he had 'The Devil's dispensation'.

When June tries to leave, she finds she is locked in, along with librarian Sylvia Ann. Phoning the police, she discovers that it is now 1927. Smashing the glass in a barred window, she sees old cars and people in period dress outside.

While the trapped women mull over their predicament, they have another awful surprise in store - locked in with them is the madman Matakitas...

Easily the best episode of the series. It is a stark exercise in terror; a symphony of echoing footsteps, deep breathing, and creeping shadows. I personally find libraries unnerving places during the day, so I hate to imagine what it would be like to spend the night in one. Leon Lissek plays the serial killer, and while hardly handsome ( I've seen people scuttling around libraries who make him look like George Clooney by comparison ) he is not the sort of man you would want to be imprisoned with, anywhere.

This was Michael Lindsay-Hogg's only contribution to the series, he went on to direct The Beatles' last film 'Let It Be'. He exerts a Hitchcockian influence over the material.

Though credited to Robert Heverley, apparently an uncredited rewrite was carried out by Michael J. ( 'Somewhere In A Crowd' ) Bird.

Good performance by Vera Miles, and that final scene really delivers a jolt.

Pretty spooky

A pretty spooky effort for the show, featuring guest star Vera Miles. The format is a time slip story involving a religious murderer and an effective setting in an old library. Feels suspenseful throughout.

Rather Confused And Clichéd

Warning: Spoilers
June Wiley is interested in a murder case from 1927 where Andros Matakis murdered four women . Resaerching the case at a library late at night June finds herself locked in and the possibility that Matakitas may be returning from the grave

This is an episode from JOURNEY TO THE UNKNOWN that is well regarded . One can understand why it has this reputation . It certainly contains all the fundamental hallmarks of horror of a lone character being trapped in a dark building with no chance of escape . JTTU is also a family friendly horror series . You can watch it in front of young children and the whole family can perhaps be entertained to a degree . In this respect it follows in the footsteps of QUATERMASS and DOCTOR WHO . Those people praising it probably have nostalgic childhood memories that have mutated through the years

In short this is an episode while having some atmosphere to it suffers badly from unexplained events . The plot involves June travelling through time to find herself in the same location forty years earlier . How did this happen ? Did a passing time warp decide to ruin June's life ? It also has to descend to the old cliché of " OMG that characters dead .... oh no he isn't he's just playing a trick on the main character " which sums up the lazy attitude of the episode
