- Caroline's leg injury becomes worse looking as time goes on. In one scene she drops a hot wet cloth on the wound and reacts from the pain. Later, after reading a passage from the Bible, she prepares to cut off her leg from above the wound. Charles later bursts in and finds her on the floor unconscious; she hadn't gone through with it.
