Preventative Medicine...
ExplorerDS678924 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The Ingallses' camping trip may have to be postponed, as Reverend Alden stops by to say he wasn't able to collect the amount of donations he was hoping for and he planned to have a bazaar on the weekend. Now here's where the Ingallses come in: Alden asked if Caroline could bake a few pies for the bake sale, which just might rake in the dough. Caroline was perfectly willing, and as for the rest of the family, she insists they go on without her so she can stay home and bake. In a way this worked out better for her because she wouldn't have a bunch of little girls under foot. While helping Charles unload the wagon on their trip back from town, Caroline gashed her leg on a metal wire protruding from the side of the buckboard. Just a little scratch, probably nothing. So after exchanging goodbyes, Charles and the girls set off, giving Caroline some much needed peace and quiet. First thing she did was soak her feet in the creek, splashing a little on that unsightly gash on her leg. After that, it was time to get baking. A few pies later, Caroline still couldn't take her mind off that gash, so she put on a make-shift dressing. Just then Doc Baker came by looking for Charles to fix his wagon wheel, but he just missed him. Just as Caroline invited him in for some pie and at the same time Doc Baker could look at that leg, he was called away on an emergency.

That night there was a fierce rain storm, and I guess some cows like the rain because one was standing out in it undaunted. Caroline went to try and get her into the barn and afterwards, she fainted. Fortunately she came to a little later, and managed to stagger back into the house. She had succumbed to fever and it was making her delirious, and as if that weren't bad enough, her leg was still in pain. Thankfully come morning the storm subsided, but now Caroline's gash can become a full blown infection. I guess Doc Baker forgot about her because he never came back. Can't blame him though, because when he was there earlier, it wasn't as serious. Thankfully Reverend Alden and Mrs. Foster arrived to pick up Caroline and her pies, which thankfully survived the fierce rain storm. Man, what IS her secret? Anyway, Alden and Foster were under the impression nobody was home because the doors and windows were locked. Caroline had locked them during the night while hallucinating and was presently passed out on the floor. Well, I guess she's screwed. But you gotta give Caroline Ingalls credit, she is one tough cookie. An infection that bad may have killed anyone else about now, but Caroline was still holding her own. She managed to bring in wood for the fire, place a warm compress on her infection and it hurt like holy hell. I'm sure Charles and the girls are having a good time though, right? Yup. Carrie bonds with a little piglet and the others splash around in the lake. Sure sounds like fun. Caroline, meanwhile, was having the opposite. According to a passage in the Bible, it says that if "thy foot offends thee, cut it off". I'm pretty sure that's just an expression, but it looks like Caroline is contemplating it. Yep, she wants to cut off her leg and subsequently bleed to death. Boy will Charles and the girls be in for a surprise when they get home! Watch your step! Caroline, put the knife down. Put it down. Thankfully, Reverend Alden and Mrs. Foster reached Charles and the girls, and when Alden spoke of his findings at the house, Charles became suspicious and raced back to Plum Creek, probably not a moment too soon. Doc Baker was summoned, Charles prayed with all his might, and by morning, Caroline's fever had broken and the infection was clearing up. Seems she used that knife not to cut off her leg, but to cut open the infection. Gross, I know, but had she not done, she would have lost the leg. In the end, all that really counts is a matter of faith. Now kids, do NOT try this at home! If you get a scratch, no matter how small, you go to the doctor or bandage it up like a mummy.

This one was really intense, some parts extremely tough to watch, especially those who are squeamish to unsightly wounds. All props for this episode go to Karen Grassle, who went above and beyond the call of duty. You can really feel her pain the whole time. She goes through such torture and anguish, and you feel as though you're going through it right along with her. It's not easy to pull it off, but she sure did. I've heard this is her favorite episode, and I can sure see why. Probably the only Caroline based episode of the series, even though she's had major roles down in the line in episodes like Season 8's "A Faraway Cry", but this one is her crowning achievement. Where was her Emmy nomination? Every year it seems they gave the Emmys to M*A*S*H, and although that was a pretty good show, I think Little House deserved a few awards for its very talented cast, writers and directors also. So if you like Caroline, you like episodes of this caliber: dark, intense and excruciating, give A Matter of Faith a try.

Having Faith
mitchrmp22 March 2013
This episode focuses on Matriarch, Caroline Ingalls. It begins pretty simple - Caroline scrapes her leg on the way out of the wagon on an old wire Charles had wrapped around the wagon. Caroline means to clean it out good, but things get a bit hectic for the mother of three and she simply forgets about it.

The Ingalls are planning to take a trip somewhere (whoops, don't remember where...) and the entire family planned to go. But when duty called - pie baking duty that is - Caroline decides to stay behind and make the pies while the children are not underfoot, then ride to the social with the Reverend and Mrs. Foster. All goes well until the infection sets in. As the day progresses, her infection gets worse and worse.

Allow me to slip to another part of the story now, since I've really said all there is to say about the main plot. It surprised me a bit to see Reverend Alden and Mrs. Foster (a married woman, if you go by a later episode, but married or not doesn't really matter) travel alone together across the prairie. In those days, that would have been seen as very inappropriate! The fact that Reverend Alden is a minister would complicate this ethical taboo even more.

The ending is pretty good and has a few spiritual messages in it. I must say, though, that one of the messages is a bit off. Charles stated,"God takes care of those that love Him." Not to get into a theological discussion or anything, but sometimes - many times - God takes care of those that don't love him. Furthermore, it was possible that Caroline died. In fact, in real life it's more than likely the outcome...Yet Charles seemed to tell his girls that because Caroline loved God, He'd spare her life. That's a wrong message to send...

This is the episode that got me hooked for good

Warning: Spoilers
Wobbly wave effects with theremin sounds? Trippy perspective shots of the ceiling? Close-ups of one single eye darting around? Yes please! That was the moment where I realised that I'm not watching this series because there's nothing better on, but rather because I'm genuinely curious to see what they come up with next.

Gotta love the way they juxtaposed Charles and the kids frolicking around with Caroline preparing for self-amputation. Great stuff!

to stay strong!
RedRainbowUnicorn234 October 2015
This episode is excellent.Karen Grassle really shines in this episode. Her acting was suburb. Although I must ad that when I watched this episode the first time at age 12 it was a little disturbing and hard to watch. But when I got older and watched it again and again I saw what an excellent episode this really is. Charles and the girls go ahead on a camping/picnic trip.Caroline stays behind bc Reverend Alden asked her if she could bake some pies for the Bazaar. She will. And Tells chalrles that she would catch up with them the upcoming Saturday. Just before they leave Caroline Cuts her leg on a piece of wire. Later when Charles and the girls are gone she sees that her leg becomes infected,And it goes form bad to worse. Watch this episode you will really emotionally connect with Caroline as she struggles without any help.

Now continue to episode 16

My favorite TV Mom is "Ma"!
Quinn407714 December 2021
One of my favorite episodes aside from some of the high fever/hallucination shots of the cabin. I do have personal connections to this episode and I'm biased, but without that I still think that this is a great Ma episode - also a reality check as to how a simple scratch could kill you before antibiotics and Tetanus shots.

Carolyn in trouble
gregorycanfield10 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is the second Little House episode in which Karen Grassle almost brought me to tears. Carolyn cuts her leg on a piece of wire. The cut becomes infected, and things go from bad to worse. Charles and the girls go away on a trip, and Carolyn is left to struggle on her own. Now for a politically incorrect observation. When Carolyn starts to really feel the effects of the infection, she lets her hair down. She looks sick, as would be expected. However, when I'm watching a woman, I see her as a woman, no matter what. In this situation, she had a natural, sultry look about her. She also showed incredible inner strength, as she did what little she could, to help herself. This episode is a definite testament to how strong a woman can be. I doubt that any man would have had the courage Carolyn had. Great episode. A round of applause for Karen Grassle!

copy of Bonanza
drfernandogil18 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
There is in the series Bonanza, an episode exactly like this one, where the protagonist is Michael Landon, who in that series played the young Joe Carwright. The episode is exactly the same. A copy, a plagiarism.- Other than that it seems like a messianic, strange and unusual chapter to me.- Very bad in my opinion.- I don't detract from Karen Grassle's good performance, but someone should have told Michael Landon that there are many of us who saw both series, Bonanza and Little House, and that the vulgar copy will not go unnoticed. - Wasn't it better to go see good old Dr. Baker or, in his case, a more distant doctor before taking such an initiative?

Of course, the miracle comes and nothing bad happens.

Just like in Bonanza.-

You'll never convince me that they didn't have something like alcohol or whatever they used for disinfectant back then that would have been put on that scratch right away.

What can go wrong....GOES WRONG!!
cbest-8432329 June 2017
Although I was happy to see Karen Grassle in her own episode, the plot was too unrealistic and fake. The directors/writers of Little House always did a nice job portraying the dangers of living during that time....this seemed a little far-fetched. Yes....someone could get a cut and an infection...but what leads to this particular situation is down right silly.... Ma scratches leg on a wire

1. Charles and the girls go away for a day...leaving mom behind (I get it...could happen)

2. When leaving for the trip, Ma hands Charles the peroxide/anti- infection medicine (hmmm)

3. Doc visits Ma out of the blue and wants Charles to fix a wheel (Ok)

4. At that moment, a town person arrives saying that his son fell out a loft and needs Doc's help? Doc said he would return...(Really?)

5. Doc goes to the house of the injured boy, and is stranded by a sudden storm....while Charles and the girls are fishing and camping and make no mention of the storm

6. A cow gets loose and Ma has to tend to it in the pouring rain which compounds the her problem..... Overall....too far-fetched.....the events just line up too perfectly in a nice hour package....

No iodine!!!!????
jilljohnson-8035912 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was one of my favorite episodes. Caroline shines in this one (not to mention her infected limb). It all starts out like most episodes, upbeat, happy and an unclouded day until she scrapes her lower leg, then all hell comes to pay its respects! Charles and all his daughters leave for wherever and take jack the dog leaving Caroline alone to bake pies. It is odd she didn't apply iodine or peroxide? Family didn't need it as much as she did. Pies, pies and more pies Caroline's toils away starts to feel warmer but keeps on.

Charles and the girls visit the pig farmer, I thought it was so sweet the way he explained to Carrie about her little piggy getting g married and having little piggies of her own.

Caroline starts reading this Bible verse if the right eye offends thee cut it out yikes!!! She is hallucinating, that is creepy with her looking at all corners of the cabin at the ceiling all we see is one eye! Creepy. What's next.

What always is needed for a little one to understand. By this time Caroline's condition worsens. She tries to put the cow back in the driven rain and passes out. Awakens manages to get inside, starts hot packs. ( what struck me odd is all those pies out on the pantry the wind would have blown the rain in and the pies would be mush) anyway the reverend and the lady picked up the pies and left. Poor Caroline shut and locked the door and shutters because of an article of a family killed in their home (I think that's it) she breaks a window with a rolling pin that was good, women are resourceful always and plowed the back 40. Their cow helps herself to neighbors flowergarden upsetting the farmer. The son was compassionate and understanding wanting to bring the cow back to the Ingalls the father "no" get the bucket the milk will make your ma feel better about her flower bed. When reverend alden and mrs. Foster show up the Ingalls are having a splashing good time when he tells them Caroline wasn't there everything was locked up. Charles concerned with Caroline gone and not leaving a note gets him going, takes off leaving the girls and Jack with the two. Charles gets flagged down by the farmer and cuts in without fail telling Charles about his cow. No Caroline didn't come together it or why would I still have it? Charles takes off leaving the p.o.ed farmer. That stuntman driving the backboard belonged on ben hur. He finds Caroline un responsive on floor. Next scene doc baker at Caroline's side Charles and girls praying outside. Reverend Allen rocking Carrie praying inside. Charles and the girls are sitting by the bedside when she wakes smiling at her family they too are smiling gratefully in kind. Doc and reverend marveled at what happened and how Caroline knew exactly when to Lance it saving her life. God had something g to do with it. Faith. Y.
