McGyver, the Exorcist, Friday the 13th and Shirley from What's Happening?
richard.fuller130 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Perhaps one of the grandest ensembles in an episode.

A young man (Richard Dean Anderson) wants to ditch his betrothed (Blair), so he pretends he's a he-man cowboy.

A woman (Betsy Palmer) learns her daughter's older boyfriend (Gene Barry) is an old flame of her own.

And a nurse (Shirley Hemphill) wants to give Isaac a physical.

There's no hint of McGyver, Mrs. Voorhies or the young girl possessed. Still, an intriguing episode for such an arrangement.

It had just been two years since Friday the 13th, McGyver had yet to be, and nearly a decade since the Exorcist.

Hemphill made such rare appearances after What's Happening, so this one is a nice surprise.

I remembered Hemphill's appearance and Anderson and Blair together, but didn't realize they were in the same episode.

Also entertaining as Anderson was riding so high on his General Hospital popularity, he said he would never do Love Boat or Fantasy Island, and here was his Love Boat voyage, so clearly he buckled.

Wild Cast

Warning: Spoilers
Linda Blair loves Chaucer? Who knew! Linda is so lovely. She's here with Macguyver, only Macguyver doesn't think she's passionate enough, so he's pawning her off on another guy. He's got a foolproof plan that will absolutely go wrong but still work out for the best. Shirley Hemphill is here as a nurse to give physicals to all the crew members. But Isaac has a secret that he's carefully protecting. Shirley is ready to pounce! 'We gonn' drink to your good health.' Gene Barry is engaged to the daughter of an old love, Betsy Palmer. She's half his age. That's a bold choice of dress Betsy is wearing in the 'Window Room.' Oh yeah there are a trio of cowboys on the ship, and they're looking for love. Man, this is a wild cast. That's one of the things I love about this show. On Kafka's Love Boat Scale, this episode gets 3 1/2 * out of a possible 4* .
