I would agree with the first review that Luther Gillis, but he is a comic foil to Magnum, and throw in Luther's newphew who looks like a Pee Wee Herman 77 lbs weakling who refers to his uncle as Unk with a major studder, and they steal the show. The newphew actually nails his uncle for doing something wrong, and I will not go any further than that. I am 59 now, I was 22 when this episode was new, and had a long standing joke with my local aunt regarding my Unk. She was 48 and now 85 and every member of my central Ohio family loves to laugh. I suspect that most people do.

Warning: Spoilers
Luther is like the worst person and a horrible human being, but he is comedy gold. His antics, Same Spade style without the brains, and quirks make for great laughs. Which is why I STILL do NOT understand why IMDB does NOT count Magnum PI as a comedy. It clearly is. Can we get that changed please?
Luther returns!

Warning: Spoilers
The Return of Luther Gillis brings back Eugene Roche as Luther H. Gillis, and it's quite an entertaining pairing between Luther and Magnum, especially with their voice-overs, and I laughed out loud when Luther asked Magnum, "Did you say something?" after Magnum had his thought bubble! Anyway, sure, some may not like the slapstick element of The Return of Luther Gillis, but that's Magnum, P. I. for you.
Anyway, I'm enjoying watching the early seasons of Magnum, P. I. with the sub-swept beaches and the hustle and bustle of Honolulu. I haven't bothered to watch the Magnum reboot and I have no interest in doing so.

Sorry I hate Luther

Luther ruins it

I agree with Mike and Robert; the character is irritating, and his task of providing old-timer cliché comic relief doesn't add anything pertinent to the series, which by Season 4 already seems to be trapped in a cycle of lazy goofiness and blatant similarities is plots. I can't count the number of little sisters and daughters trapped with meanies in faraway Hawaii, waiting to be rescued by a relative from the mainland with help from Thomas, or old friends who come back into the guys' lives with shady stories that very slowly unravel...
I hope the bar is raised at some point in this season, with comedy taking a backseat to dramatic action plots about Cold War intelligence and worldly crime bosses, as in many previous episodes.
And hopefully WITHOUT Luther.
