Sets the Pace
dougdoepke26 May 2013
This first episode introduces the main characters in roles that remain for the next 4-years. The girl-crazy Dobie, the slow-witted Maynard, the ill-tempered Herbert and his good-natured wife, plus the greedy, sex-kitten Thalia. Too bad Weld (Thalia) didn't stay with the series since she's perfect as Dobie's nemesis.

The plot here revolves around, what else, but Dobie's scheme to get money so he can win Thalia's mercenary affections. The dialog is typically rapid fire and amusing. Dobie also talks to the camera, explaining his problems, a real departure from the norms of the period. On the whole, it's an entry that sets the pace for the next 4-years, with a good ironic twist ending.
