Especially good form

One of my favourites. The plot, in which fly-by-night young Indian Shamy passes Arthur forged $20 notes, is nothing special. The quality lies in the supporting cast being on especially good form.

Detective Sergeant Chisholm is even more uptight than usual, his ambition to nail Arthur apparently to be forever thwarted: "there are certain things in life more important than nicking Arthur Daley, but at the moment I can't think of any". Dave has no better luck reproaching Arthur about his slate, which is "getting longer than Gone With The Wind". Dave is a man of few words but they are always very much to the point.

Not forgetting a one-off comic turn from Fred Evans as The Syrup, as in syrup of fig - wig. A vain, deluded fool, Syrup imagines his 'Roger Moore' makes him look like Moore, but sadly he's more Albert Steptoe in a very obvious wig. Splendid stuff.

Chisholm v Daley
The basic plot is that a video store clerk of Indian descent is ripping off the till, gets fired, and out of desperation steals the master tape of presumably a Bollywood movie from his video store owner. He also passes fake 20s to Arthur Daley to settle a debt.

That sets in motion Chisholm and Jones chasing Daley and McCann around the estate looking for the stash of fake 20s and whatever else can be pinned on our favorite con man. The clerk, meanwhile, flies to India with the master tape, on a loan from Terry, to sell the reproduction rights into the Indian videotape market.

It's pretty uncomplicated Minder, which is usually the best Minder. And it culminates in a top-notch scene where Daley, at his warehouse, is first visited by the rightful owners of the mastertape, the video store owner. Shortly thereafter Chisholm and Jones show up with a search warrant. George Cole has never been better. First he fends of the threats of the Indian shop owner and his hired goons, wasting no time trying to make deal after deal on his stuff. Then he parries with Chisholm during the search, getting in some fantastic barbs.

If there is a bad episode featuring Patrick Malahide as Chisholm I have yet to see it. He is truly the unsung ''star" of Minder.
