Armored Car Robbery

THE NAKED CITY – Nickel Ride – 1958

This is the second episode of the 1958 to 1963 Police series, THE NAKED CITY. The series covered stories of New York's 65th Precinct. The leads were played by John McIntire, James Franciscus, Harry Bellevar, Paul Burke and Horace McMahon. The first 39 episodes of the 138 episode run were half hour productions. The remaining episodes were expanded to an hour running time. Each episode starts and finishes with the narrator saying, "There are 8 million stories in the Naked City."

In this one, Detectives John McIntire, James Franciscus and Harry Bellevar are hitching a ride on a Staten Island ferry. McIntire is there to tell his old friend, Cameron Prud'Homme, that he should retire from being a ferry captain. This discussion is interrupted by a group of armored car hold-up types. They have taken control of an armored car taking the ferry to Staten Island. They also have a man stationed in the ferry engine room, and another by the wheelhouse.

Needless to say things go wrong for the crooks. The unexpected presence of John Law throws the old monkey wrench into the gears. Pistols are produced and several of the unlawful crowd soon pick up a selection of unwanted lead souvenirs.

A pretty good episode of this gritty, shot on location, series. The episode was again written by one time Oscar winner, Stirling Silliphant. His Oscar was for, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT.

John McIntire would leave the series after the first season to replace Ward Bond on WAGON TRAIN, after Bond's death.

The title of the episode refers to the price of a fare to take the ferry at the time, a nickel.

Solid episode of a fascinating show!

Interesting episode of a great show. The image-quality of the b+w film is beautifully clear and clean. The basic story of the episode is a bit far-fetched if only for the complexity of the plan, there are far too many variables and 'what if' scenarios for a plan like this to ever succeed,I mean if you really could assemble a group that could pull something like this off,you would not need to be doing risky stuff like this,to begin with, right?

This approach here is certainly not 'easy money' that's for sure!

Guns aren't made to be safe it they were they wouldn't make them

****SPOILERS**** Feeling that he outlived his usefulness senior captain of the Staten island ferry the 74 year old Captain Adam Fint played by the distinguish looking Camero Prud'Homme is about to be given his walking or retirement papers. Just when on what was supposed to be his last trip or nickel ride, that's what a ride on the ferry cost then, his boat is high or sea-jacked by this gang of bumbling bank or armored car robbers lead the not playing with a full deck Mr. Biggers, Johnny Seven.

This insanely planned armored car robbery was to and did take place on the Statan Island Ferry when it was some 3 miles out at sea! With no where to go and with Mr. Biggers having shot up the ferry's machinery as well as wounding its 74 year old Captain Flint, the only person who can operate it, the entire NY Police water patrol as well as units of the US Coast Guard had the ferry surrounded; With the by now out of his skull Mr. Biggers & Co. in their gun-sites.

Not much of a job for Lt. Dan Muldoon, John MacIntire, has his partner Det. James Holloran, James Franciscus, to do but wait for the ferry with the robbers on it to be brought to shore and arrested by the awaiting NYPD and coast guard military police. As for the wounded Captain Flint he got a new lease on life by not being forced to retire by the, who seemed to be his boss, police Commissioner Harry Holcombe who hated to do it. Captain Flint proved that in spite of his advanced years he can still do his job better then anyone much younger them himself ever could.

Heartfelt story

Fine work by two guest actors highlight this segment of "The Naked City": Cameron Prud'Homme is perfect as the crusty old captain of the Staten Island Ferry who refuses to retire, while Johnny Seven is amazingly over the top as the wide-eyed maniacal thief who runs the heist of a bank's armored car, staged dramatically right on the ferry!

The human interest drama of McIntire assigned by his police commissioner to breath the bad news to Prud'Homme that it's time for him to retire is very well-done, adding a human interest angle to the cop show. And the actor most associated with the hit's long run, Harry Bellaver, is introduced. Location shooting in and around the real ferry is a key to the segment's success.
