The Beauty of the Great Outdoors
JordanThomasHall25 May 2017
The professor (Richard Long) has been appointed by his university to conduct a feasibility study to guide the legislative committee on the best uses of the Blackhawk Wilderness Area. Nanny (Juliet Mills) suggests the entire family go camping there, but the professor insists on doing his research work over the area indoors using maps, written information, and the university's computer. When he is informed that the computer isn't working, he reluctantly tells the family they all can go camping there. Different things come up that prevent them from going, but Nanny comes up with incredible solutions. The family begins a scenic hike into the wildness mountain and set up camp. Through misfortunes they find themselves truly enjoying the pureness of the outdoors, a lesson for the professor's report. A family camping trip is a premise seen in other shows, but the spectacular scenery here, albeit brief, really stands out. It's an episode that inspires one's desire to immerse themselves in nature.

The family really wants a campout but the Professor doesn't

The Professor is assigned the job of working with a legislative committee on the best use of a wilderness area. It's a great opportunity to have a family campout - which they have never had - but the Professor reallllly doesn't want to do it. His idea of the great outdoors is the golf course. Nanny manages to finagle things so that his excuses keep washing away, and they go, and of course, even the Professor comes around to having a good time.

The scenery on the camping trip was terrific. It was filmed at what was the Fox Ranch (where a lot of films and tv shows were filmed, including M*A*S*H), but is now the Malibu Creek State Park, so you can go visit yourself.

One very big minus for me in this episode, and I'd love to know who was responsible for this but I know it wasn't the director - who insisted that Nanny go hiking and camping in a miniskirt and three-inch heels? I was in college in 1970 near a national park, and you would never catch a woman dressed like that on a trail. Really bad costuming idea.
