Unholy and a Bit Convoluted

Warning: Spoilers
Noam Pitlik plays Jack Stone, s man with a scheme to rob the railroad of over $400,000. He does it by causing a avalanche of boulders to smash into the train carrying the money, knowing the train won't be able to deliver the money and will have to put it in the Nichols bank. Yeah, I know already its a convoluted story.

Nichols just happens along when he runs out of gas and meets Stone and Gloria (Jennifer Gann)his "moll". They assume he is "Fingers" the safe cracker they are waiting for. Nichols decides its safer to play along. It is until the real Fingers shows up. There is an overlong scene where Nichols and Fingers both try and prove they are the real safe cracker. Stone decides to take them BOTH on the job and see who can open the safe.

There's some funny moments in this episode and I really liked the work of Jennifer Gann, who only did two more performances before calling it a career. Margot Kidder as Ruth seems especially affectionate towards Nichols in this episode and Stuart Margolin as Mitch demonstrates how quickly he can turn on Nichols. For me Garner is always a pleasure to watch and he as solid as ever, improvising his con just to save his life.

There are a few good moments spread throughout, but the story just is very convoluted and in need of a rewrite and tightening up.

I remember watching this when it first aired. The plot ambles along, then gets complicated then gets crazy. A great cast of characters, an exquisitely drawn out resolution and it looks like Nichols and Ruth are finally going to hook up when... watch and enjoy.

As usual a succinct precis is not appreciated hence this appendix.

I just got the DVD set of this series. Having watched them all now I found the series to be mildly amusing with its sly sexual undercurrents and the conniving of its various characters. Amiable is the best description. Everyone seems to be having a good time and Ketcham and Mitch are a great comic duo.
