I Didn't Know You Were Good At Maths!

The Trotter family; a game of poker; a double-headed coin; what could go wrong!?

One of the better series two efforts here. We're not quite at perfect British comedy gold just yet, but we're certainly on the right track now.

Del v Boycie and the curse of the double-headed coin
snoozejonc11 September 2020
Del's up for a game of cards with Boycie who intends to take Del for everything he's got.

This is another strong episode from the second season. It is plot driven and I found it to be more compelling than funny. The story of Del's gambling problem comes a bit out of left field and is never really touched upon again, but it does make for an interesting character study of him, along with Boycie and Trigger.

The humour is up to the usual standard with lots of irony and a running double-headed coin joke that pops up in several moments with great timing. As always the chemistry between all five actors is fantastic.

What really takes you along is Del the underdog in a 'battle of wits' with the all powerful villain in Boycie. This kind of overshadow's the humour a bit and makes for a very different episode in a good way.

One of the Classics, right?

Warning: Spoilers
Del's gambling, tonight with Boycie, but can Grandad's double-headed coin save him from the Trotter's money woes...?

This episode ranks among the classics. It shows Trigger's loyalty (car keys), Boycie's cold, sly side and Del Boy's stupid, yet remarkable determination.

Good bits: - For some reason I find Boycie's card "trick" to be hilarious when he shifts his hand back over and he has "Four!!" kings. Brilliant.

  • It's not a Post-2000 episode, Hay!

Bad bits: Nothing really. One of the best OFAHs...

Another Brilliant One

Warning: Spoilers
Del has a gambling session with Trigger and Boycie. But Boycie is cheating. "A Losing Streak" continues the wonderful "winning streak" of season two. It seems unmissable. Season one was weak but season two works amazingly and it's hilarious. "A Losing Streak" was amazing, i really loved the way it was written and the way it works as a bottle episode (only usual sets and only the main cast). I watched it many times and loved it every one.

Boycie's character gets a bigger role and a much more developed one than in "Go West Young Man" and John Challis is perfect. Trigger gets a something of a developing role which Roger Lloyd Pack delivers without a mistake.

Classic

Develops the characters really well while also giving you many laughs. It spends the early part of the episode setting the scene and it pays off so well at the end. It manages to show the kind of people Del's two friends are and the kind of man he is. The fact he managed to talk his brother into accepting the situation and the use of the money just goes to show how gifted he is as a salesperson.

The game is a classic and memorable moment with clear cheating going on, the scene with trigger giving up his car was so sweet. The payoff with the double-headed coin from earlier in the episode is absolutely brilliant too.

A Losing Streak

I'm not a huge fan of "the characters play poker" episodes of sitcoms, but this has enough sharp lines, and a very funny finish to see it through.

A nice episode.
