Fresh story to an old plot. Comes across well
kfo949420 December 2011
I found this episode to be quite entertaining. The story was like many others but the way the show ended and the good casting of the actors made the show seem fresh.

It starts out as Patricia Kean (Julie Adams) goes to see a fortune teller. Pat was going for a laugh but when the predictions starting becoming true, no one could deny that something strange was going on. The fortune teller Marius Stone (James Lamphier) tells Pat that she will get a promotion, then marry an older gentleman, then become a widow before marring her prince charming.

All this is funny to Pat until the next day when her boss Max Armstead (Jesse White) tells her that she is promoted to head of marketing. And with her boss having a heart condition, he ask one more time if she will marry him. Feeling pity for the older man she agrees to marry the older man just to make him happy.

In the mean time she has met a young good-looking guy named Gordon Evans (Lee Phillips). She tells him that he is marring old man Armstead but he says that he will wait for her. This all was forecast by the fortune teller at the beginning of the show.

When old man Armstead gets a letter saying that his new wife is seeing another man he gets upset. Perry goes to see him and his last words, before falling down the stairs, were 'she poisoned me'.

Pat now goes on trial for the murder of her new husband. Most people are under the impression that she married the old man for the money then killed him to get to Gordon Evans, her prince charming. But Perry is not buying all this fortune telling stuff and will try to produce the real murderer in court.

Even though this plot has been played many times in Perry episodes, this story comes across as an interesting watch. The actors really help the story. Julie Adams is terrific as the defendant and Lee Phillips does a good job trying to woo her. James Lamphier was a perfect cast as the spooky fortune teller that was just a little to perfect in his prediction for Perry.

And even William Talman as Hamilton Burger has some nice moments. At one point in the trial gets carried away with his examination that he keeps talking over Perry's objection.

And with the court ending, that is different than most, the case comes to a close with more than one person seeing the insides of LA county jail.

This episode is a nice watch for all Perry Mason fans.

Follow the Money

Warning: Spoilers
Patricia Kean (Julie Adams) goes to fortune teller Marius Stone (James Lamphier) who predicts for her a promotion at work, a marriage to an older man, widowhood and a marriage to her Prince Charming. One by one his predictions come true only she meets the younger man (Lee Phillips) before marrying the older man, her boss Max Armstead (Jesse White). As Max dies, he accuses Patricia of murdering him. The DA agrees and prosecutes her with Perry coming to her aid.

The story is well told, though if one just follows the money, the resolution is pretty obvious early on. If the episode has a fault, it really doesn't give you a lot of suspects. What makes it so good are the really strong guest appearances by both Julie Adams and Jesse White. They do a great job of making the relationship real. Neither actor being known for their subtlety (Julie Adams being best known as the girl in "Creature from the Black Lagoon")(Though she was good in her recent appearance on "Lost")(while White was usually cast in comic roles), they really rise to the occasion and deliver what have to be one of the best performances of their lives, as well as two of the more notable guest star appearances.

The ending has another over the top resolution, but at least its not the killer confessing on the stand. It's the killer's accomplice trying to throw the blame on the real killer and trying to worm out of their guilt (the accomplice should have turned state's evidence and made a deal first!).

Lt. Drumm makes another minor appearance, and seems much friendlier to Perry than Tragg or Anderson. Della even gets a nice moment when she figures out a problem that has left Paul and Perry baffled. "You're a genius!" Paul tells her. Della thinks about it and agrees. "Yes, yes I am."

Bit of a reach but still pretty good
kocagarya26 June 2018
Any Perry Mason episode with Julie Adams and Jesse White in the same episode is always good in my book. This was a bit of a reach, but the cast still made it a good episode.

Leader of Industry??
darbski18 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** Two main items: 1) Jesse White has played in at least TWO episodes wherin he's married to very pretty younger women. In both he's an angry, loudmouthed boor; how does he do it?? 2) The character who is Perry's client in this episode is not just clearly. but crystal clearly not fit for any leadership role. She is so easily led by an obvious fake "fortune teller" that she could never be a buyer or anything important in a major (or minor, for that matter), seller or distributor of goods. Those facts off my mind, I'll say that the plot's pretty good, the acting is very good, the action is quick, and I liked it...an 8.

THE FORTUNE TELLER RULES.... BEWARE!
tcchelsey30 September 2023
I always thought the final season of PERRY MASON was kind of an experimental time, with all sorts of different angles for a whodunit, and some really fun stuff. As usual, a dynamic cast played along and exceptionally well.

As the last reviewer noted, you cannot miss with the likes of Julie Adams in the lead, playing a young woman named Pat who has caught the eye of her wealthy boss, well played by comedian Jesse White. Applause for both of these seasoned actors as they do their very best. Watch their performances.

Here's the nifty catch... A fortune teller(?) enters the picture and fortells DOOM for their marriage. Jessie, a much older man, keels over and is dead --and Pat is the prime suspect. It also doesn't help her case that she's been keeping company with a younger man???

The password is POISON. Lots.... Ford Rainey is right at home as the "dead serious" medical examiner.

Any story with a mysterious fortune teller, a bit of the macabre thrown in, is always an audience pleaser. Credit William Bast, who wrote four episodes for the final season of the series. Bast later wrote one of the best tv movies of the 70s, THE LEGEND OF LIZZIE BORDEN, starring Elizabeth Montgomery. Unforgettable and so creepy. He also produced THE COLBYS tv series, starring Barbara Stanwyck.

By the way, look for veteran Belle Mitchell playing the gypsy. She specialized (in a career going back to silent films) in these types of roles and was great. Belle was in such classic films as THE HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, and in some box office blockbusters, such as FUNNY GIRL, AIRPORT and HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER, later in her career.

Not to be missed, and in glorious, spooky black and white. SEASON 9 CBS remastered dvd box set.

Could be "Ripped from Today's Headlines"
charma_craven30 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode could be advertised as "Ripped from Today's Headlines". Tonight ABC aired "Happily Never After" with wife leading boyfriend every step of the way and set him up to murder her husband. Although in this episode it wasn't the wife that led the murderer to commit the act, it was similar to mysteries happening in real life. This episode was enjoyable with Julie Adams and White and quite entertaining with the plot twist of the son committing the murder. Perry, Paul. Julie and Della knew not to have their tea leaves read when the gypsy comes up to them in the restaurant in the end. The wine bottle made into a candle on the restaurant table was all the rage in the 60's.

Adams and White are wonderful
montmorencysr30 September 2023
This episode is one of my favorites. There is a charming, believable and palpable chemistry between Julie Adams and Jessie White. I love all the scenes with them. Both very underrated actors. Adams has never been sexier and White gives the surprise performance of his life, I think. I wished I had seen him in more lead roles on TV. He proves he had the acting chops to handle such roles as does Adams. It's sweet she takes a liking to an older man. Their banter is fun, real. I found the script pretty good for season ten. The first time I saw this I thought it was in one of the earlier seasons. I found myself surprised at the collusion at the end of the show. They had me fooled. Perry, Della and Paul Drake were at there usual best and I also like Richard Anderson as well. I have no complaints about this episode. A great night in TV.

Requires an Awful Lot of Control
Hitchcoc27 February 2022
This one begins with a fortune teller outlining a series of events that will lead to murder. I don't have a lot to say about this one because it seemed unbelievable from beginning to end. It all starts with her marrying the Maytag repair man and goes downhill from there.

It's all in the tea leaves
sol12188 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** Still very attractive but at 35 years old no spring chicken Pat Kean, Julie Adams, is encouraged by her friend Beth Fuller, Nan Martin, to see this fortune teller Marius Stone, James Lanphier,to get a read on her future prospects for marriage. It's soon that Pat finds out Stone's predictions for her future, marriage as well as everything else, to be amazingly accurate! So accurate that they in fact predict the untimely death or murder of her future husband her boss Max Armstead played by the future Matag Man in his fifth and final appearance in a Perry Mason, Raymond Burr, episode!

In one of the most shocking death scenes in all of the some 250 or so Perry Mason episodes Max in a fit of what seems like total insanity after accusing Pat of poising him falls down a flight of stairs in his mansion to his death. This in front of Perry Mason, his personal attorney, when Pat called him to come over and see if he can settle her deranged and suicidal husband down!

With Pat now indicted in the murder of her husband Max Perry takes up her case and digs into both Max and Pat's past to find out what exactly drove Max insane as well as to is death in an effort to exonerate Pat in his murder. And Perry hits the jackpot in Pat's secret and mysterious lover Gorden Evens, Lee Philips. This guy, Philips, has been having the hots for Pat ever since he came into her life from what seemed like, did he come from Tebit or Inner Mongolia, places unknown.

**SPOILERS*** As it soon turns out this Gordon is actually the late Max's disowned and good for nothing son Allen whom he hasn't seen or years. It's Allen who almost bankrupted his father's business and skipped out, with the company's cash, to South America in order to avoid being arrested tried and convicted for embezzlement and grand larceny. Now trying to make amends with his late father this no good rotten low life swine is trying to steal, while Max was still alive, his wife Pat away from him!

Explosive final with both Max's murders, yes there was two of them, attacking each other in open court in who, of the two of them, really was responsible for his murder in order to escape the San Quentin gas chamber. This scene itself is more exciting as well as mind boggling as all of the many likewise off the wall and ridicules scenes in this Perry Mason episode put together. It's an actual once in a lifetime experience for anyone fortunate or unfortunate enough to be able to sit though and watch it and still keep from laughing themselves to death!

This One Was A Reach
bkoganbing9 April 2012
This episode of Perry Mason finds him defending Julie Adams a young second and trophy wife for Jesse White. She was his secretary, but on the grounds of having her fortune told by an astrologer she marries White. Then White winds up very dead from someone tampering with his digitalis. As Mason was White's lawyer she inherits him as an attorney and of course that's a good thing.

I found this episode to be way too much of a reach and way too coincidental. This was the ninth season of Perry Mason and the writers were straining to find original stories that were plausible. This one just doesn't work.
