THE PROFESSIONALS – "Close Quarters"- 1978

Episode seven of the of the 1977 to 1983, UK, action-crime series, THE PROFESSIONALS. Gordon Jackson is in charge of CI-5, a group of men drawn from the SAS, Police and other law enforcement agencies. Their mandate is to stop acts of terrorism and threats against the UK.

CI-5 Agent Lewis Collins is out on medical leave because of a hand injury. So he takes his girl, the stunning Gabrielle Drake, out for a relaxing cruise down a river. The couple row by a man standing on the bank. Collins recognizes the man, Clive Arrindell, from some wanted photos at CI-5 headquarters. Arrindell is a member of a German terrorist group.

Collins rows up the river a bit and lands the boat. He doubles back by land and jumps the terrorist. Since CI-5 men are always on call, they are always armed. He cuffs the swine and drags him back to the boat. Collins tells Drake there will be a slight delay in their day out. Collins needs to drop Arrindell at the nearest Police station.

That idea turns out not to be that simple. Three other members of the terrorist gang, Madleina Nedeva, David Bradley and Barney James choose that moment to arrive by motorboat. Arrindell starts shouting and the three terrorists make a beeline for Collins and company. Collins manages to speed their rowboat under some overhanging trees and land the craft.

Collins stuffs a rag in the captured man's yap and rushes Drake and Arrindell along a riverside pathway. They need to get to the nearby village where Collin's car is parked. The villains have the same idea and race to the same car park. Having a speedboat of course gives them the advantage.

When Collins and company appear, Miss Nedeva and her boys pull several sub machine guns out from under their jackets. Shots are exchanged but Collins manages to load his bunch in a car and roar off. The terrorist swine likewise grab an auto and give chase.

Collins pulls off at a large house and shoves everyone in. The owner, Alan Surtees is not amused with the entrance. He quickly changes his mind when Collins flashes his weapon and demands the phone. He gets on the blower and calls headquarters. CI-5 boss, Gordon Jackson is soon on the horn and Collins explains what is happening. The phone lines though are cut before Collins can give Jackson an exact location. The terrorists have the house surrounded and demand Collins release their leader. Collins is of course somewhat reluctant to do this. He knows the nasty types will just kill them all if he complies.

More shots are exchanged with Surtees and one of the terrorists being killed. Collins is down to his last few rounds. What to do? Ci-5 in the meantime is flooding the general area to try and find Collins and company.

The villains know they will soon run out of time and decide to storm the house. Doors are kicked and Collins, Drake and his prisoner flee to the roof. Collins sees a CI-5 car passing on the main road. He uses one of his last rounds to try and signal the auto. The car, with Jackson and Agent Martin Shaw inside, take the "hint". They race up to the house in the old "nick of time" bit. The two attacking terrorists are shot dead.

This is another, fast, violent, and exciting episode of a great UK series.

Terrorists on the Thames
louiseculmer8 May 2015
This is one of the most gloriously improbable episodes of The professionals. Bodie, who has injured his hand, is out rowing on the Thames near Marlow with his girlfriend, when he just happens to spot the leader of a terrorist gang that CI5 are after. naturally he has to capture the terrorist single handed, but no sooner has he done so than the rest of the gang turn up in a boat (no doubt they were going for a picnic). So Bodie and girlfriend depart with terrorist leader, with the rest of the gang giving chase. if you can swallow the basic improbability of a terrorist gang hanging out on the river at Marlow (not normally known as a terrorist stronghold) then you can enjoy the thrills and spills as Bodie battles the gang single-handed (and left handed at that) while Cowley and Doyle desperately try to track him down. Absolutely thrilling from beginning to end.

A stand-alone adventure

Warning: Spoilers
CLOSE QUARTERS offers something a little different for PROFESSIONALS fans with Bodie heading off for what is essentially a stand-alone adventure. Inevitably he goes off on holiday only to find himself caught up in more violent action, this time tackling a gang that includes a youthful role for David Bradley, horrible old Filch and Walder Frey himself (Bradley still looks exactly the same 50 years ago as he does now). It's suspenseful and exciting in equal measure, one big shoot-out in essence.

Close Quarters

Bodie is put on medical leave due to a hand injury. While out boating on the Thames near Marlow with his girlfriend. Bodie spots Franz Myer, a wanted German terrorist.

Now Bodie could had gone to the nearest public phone box and tipped off Cowley. That would had been too easy.

Bodie apprehends Myer himself with his injured hand. Myer's terrorist friends then pursue Bodie and his girlfriend.

Bodie finds shelter in a vicarage in the countryside. He phones Cowley but the phone is cut off by the time Bodie gets to tell him his whereabouts.

As Myer plays mind games with Bodie, with the terrorists shooting at them all. Cowley and Doyle needs to find them fast.

It is a shame that CI-5 never have access to a helicopter. Then again that would make the episodes only 20 minutes long.

It is tense but also rather silly. That shot Bodie fired at Cowley's car. It could has taken his head off.
