Warning: Spoilers
FIRST NIGHT is more of an ordinary episode, once again focusing on a kidnapping with the boys drafted in to release the kidnapped political figure. The backdrop of international diplomacy is an interesting one, but I found the action more routine here, despite a great stunt involving Bodie.

One of the best episodes

An Israeli diplomat is kidnapped in broad daylight from outside the London's Royal Festival Hall in an audacious snatch by a mystery gang. With the man now held hostage by the gang in an empty semi-detached house, they issue their demands.

Wanting to avoid giving in to them (and also an embarrassing diplomatic incident on British soil), Cowley tasks his men with finding the hideout - but with so little to go on, Bodie and Doyle will have to act fast and smart.

This has always been one of my favourite episodes, not least for the fast-paced and exciting kidnapping scene near the start, as the gang escape by hovercraft down the Thames - and also the excellent climax with an altogether completely different form of transport.

It's a well-paced and tense episode - but we also get some exellent Bodie and Doyle 'car banter' (Doyle ribbing Bodie about his choice of sandwich filler and unhealthy diet), and an insight into how the vagaries of their jobs as secret agents hampers each of their love lifes! There's also another humorous scene in a police canteen with a couple of young women who seem to be somewhat resistant to the boys' charms.

It all rattles along well as the scant clues to the kidnapped diplomat's whereabouts are pieced together - and all ends in a brisk and efficient finale in one of the show's most memorable scenes.

All in all, an excellent episode which showcases very well what makes this classic series so good.

A visiting Israeli minister is kidnapped from outside the Festival Hall.

Cowley under pressure from the Israeli government needs to find him quick. A taped message from the minister has an embedded code. The kidnapping is not political and the Palestinians are not involved. It might just to do with money.

Bodie and Doyle think that victim might be holed up in a residential area going by a photograph sent by the kidnappers. They get on top of a double decker bus to locate the right area.

The episode is topped off by a very good action sequence, I think Lewis Collins stunt double enjoyed crashing through that house.
