THE PROFESSIONALS – "Heroes" - 1977 Episode five of the of the 1977 to 1983, UK, action-crime series, THE PROFESSIONALS. Gordon Jackson is in charge of CI-5, a group of men drawn from the SAS, Police and other law enforcement agencies. Their mandate is to stop acts of terrorism and threats against the UK.

CI–5 get involved when an American Senator, Bruce Boa, is bumped off in broad daylight at a road block. Five armed gunmen had stopped his van and emptied a twin-barrelled shotgun into Boa. The murder is witnessed by a half dozen other motorists at the traffic stop.

CI-5 boss, Gordon Jackson arranges for the newspapers to release a story stating that the gunmen had been identified by these same witnesses. The papers however, go one further and also publish the names and addresses of the witnesses.

CI-5 now must now hurry to find and protect the witnesses before the gunmen find them. Two of the people in question are killed before CI-5 reaches them. The remaining witnesses are quickly hidden away for their own protection.

Now how do they flush out the gunmen? One of the witnesses, Robert McBain, an ex- Royal Marine offers to act as bait. The offer is accepted and CI-5 place carious men around McBain's house. Sure enough, the gunmen come a calling. A fairly big firefight happens with the villains and one CI-5 agent going for the deep six.

Not the best episode I've seen of the series by any means, but it still delivers plenty of violence and action.

A brutal episode

Warning: Spoilers
HEROES is a particularly brutal and energy-fuelled episode which sees our heroes going up against a gang of machine-gunning murderers who tackle a security van in a lengthy and astonishing set-piece sequence which goes way further with the stunts and spectacle than you'd ever imagine. The rest of the episode is filled with more brutality and suspense as our heroes set a trap but find themselves outwitted in turn by the bad guys.

Heroes

Before Donald Trump there was US senator John Jerry Patterson, a right wing demagogue.

There is a hit ordered on the senator and Cowley wants to bustle him out of the country. There is an attempted heist of silver bullion being carried actual on a truck. Members of the public foil it but the security guard is shot dead.

The murdered guard was Patterson in disguise. He was the target. the silver bullion was a cover story.

When a newspaper publish the names and addresses of the potential witnesses, their lives are put in danger. The bad guys go after them. (Leaving aside the question as why would a newspaper do this when the villains are still on the loose!)

Heroes is a disjointed episode. If Peter J Hammond disassociated himself from the episode is because it does have serious plotting and credibility issues. These bad guys go around and shoot all potential witnesses. How is it they managed to get to several of them sequentially and the various CI5 agents could not.

John Castle steals his scenes as the trigger happy CI5 agent, Tommy.
