Trail boss Eric Fleming comes across a freshly dead rancher who was once an outlaw and is shot down by his former running buddies led by Neville Brand.
Finding Fleming with the body, widow Sheila Bromley and son Ralph Reed think
it was Fleming who did the deed.
Not knowing who to believe and not wanting to make any rush to judgment the sheriff makes Clint Eastwood a temporary deputy and paroles Fleming in his custody.
What the outlaws are in the area for is the robbery of church funds being carried by Father Louis Jean Heydt. In the end all these plot elements do coalesce to an exciting conclusion. Turns out the priest is a former outlaw himself and hasn't lost any of the skills acquired.
