A fire breaks out in the Ropers' kitchen. Stanley relates how it must have been an electrical fire with shooting sparks. Fearful of the ramifications, Jeffrey goes above and beyond to host and please the Ropers. Helen tries to persuade Stanley to tell Jeffrey the truth about the fire- Stanley short-circuited the toaster. He refuses, for it would raise his insurance premiums. Stanley, instead turns it against Jeffrey and an agreement is made that Jeffrey pays for everything if the matter is dropped. Meanwhile, Jeffrey has insisted the Ropers stay in their apartment until its repainted, but the painter can't come until the next day. Jeffrey laments their staying overnight. Naturally, complications arise.
