Johnny LaRue makes a movie
Jimmy_the_Gent410 September 2018
This episode starts with a commercial for the hits of the 5 Neat Guys, a bland singing group from the Fifties with songs like "Let's Have A Party In My Rec Room" There is a Japanese talk show with Dave Thomas as Tim Ishimuni interviewing a Godzilla like monster (John Candy) and commercials with Donny and Marie and a very funny impression of Brenda Vaccaro's husky breathy voice by Andrea Martin.

Then we have a hilarious Sammy Maudlin Show sequence. Maudlin (Joe Flaherty) is a fawning host with overly theatrical guest Lola Heatherton (Catherine O'Hara). Candy is the sniveling sidekick William B Williams. Bobby Bittman (Eugene Levy) is a third rate comic whose claim to fame is the catchphrase "How are ya!". He is a hilarious parody of comics of the time who sometimes try to be serious ("As a comic in all seriousness..." always starts off one of his rants). During all this a bewildered Mother Teresa(Martin) is on stage!

The main storyline concerns Johnny LaRue (Candy) a sleazy Hugh Hefner wannabe who gets to star in his own Movie Of The Week called "Polynesiantown". He plays the owner of a Polynesian theme restaurant in a parody of "Chinatown". Dr John is the musical guest and he sings two of his 1970s hits "Iko Iko" and "Such A Night".

More sketches have Rick Moranis as a motor mouthed Jewish New York guy with a talk show and a very funny commercial for a Broadway show called "Indira" a parody of the show "Evita" with India prime minister Indira Gandhi, her co star is yodeling Slim Whitman! Another hilarious sequence has Candy playing a Russian Olympic weight lifter with his own variety show. He sings Getting To Know You and has guests like Dolly Parton, Fred Astaire and Rodney Dangerfield.

Another sketch is a British Film Festival with the cast doing very funny exaggerated British accents and parodies with titles like "Look Back In Bloody Anger"

The final sequence is Moranis as Gerry Todd, the video DJ host of a very cheap video show. Moranis also appears in two videos as a lounge lizard type singer doing versions of New Wave 80s songs like the Vapors "Turning Japanese" and "De Doo Doo Doo, De Da Da Da Da" by the Police.
