The smart detective is Peter Corrio. A private eye who has managed to accumulate a good run of finding stolen jewels. Then returning them to the insurance company for reward.
With the Oppenheim emeralds being exhibited. Corrio has devised a fool proof security system. The Saint is not so convinced that it is foolproof. After all Simon Templar knows a thing or two about stealing jewels.
There is already mutual loathing between Corrio and Templar. It gets more intense when Janice Dixon, who tells Templar that her brother was killed trying to escape from the police for one of the jewel thefts. She thinks that the jewels were planted on him by Corrio.
Janice also believes that Corrio is behind the recent jewellery thefts. He steals them in order to return the jewels for the insurance rewards.
The Saint persuades Inspector Teal of his theory but Corrio has other plans for the Saint.
I did like how Templar immediately spotted a flaw in Corrio's foolproof plan. I was surprised why Corrio devised a plot to frame Templar, when even Teal has suspicions about Corrio.
