"Memoirs of Anton Chekov" was another of the funny early eps of "SCTV"
tavm14 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This early ep of "SCTV" begins with a commercial that starts with a frozen zoo animal hating Canada but segues into a bat that hits him! The ad is for a baseball bat. There are three "SCTV News" segments with the first having Floyd Robertson doing most of it since Earl Camembert is asleep most of the time because he just got through doing the early morning edition and just barely gets one story through. When Floyd complains about his unprofessionalism, Earl rebuts with his complaints of salary differences between the two with him getting way less. Second spot has Floyd presenting viewpoints of blacks and women but Dave Thomas presents the former in blackface which Floyd rightly admonishes him for and does the same for Earl when he dresses as a woman in presenting the female perspective. Last one has Floyd doing a funny story which he continues laughing at through Earl's serious commentary though since this piece ended the show, I was disappointed the YouTube upload had a female announcer talking through it. Other pieces include one in which Andrea Martin is a bearded lady, another in which Ms. Martin convinces Catherine O'Hara to go into prostitution, another in which Ms. O'Hara is a nun willingly whipping herself and other self-induced punishments, a piece called "Waiting for Chekov" in which the principals are expecting Anon Chekov but get the Mr. Chekov from "Star Trek", a Johnny LaRue sketch in which he's this time a scientist making his kid assistant do some of his stuff, and a rerun of a previous sketch (from "Ethnic Humor") in which Harold Ramis plays a Mountie. This was a mostly hilarious ep of an early "SCTV" show. P. S. The kid in the LaRue sketch was played by Donald Cowper-John Candy's nephew-who would appear in many of these first-season "SCTV" eps.
