STAGE 7 – Armed – 1955

This is the 14th episode of the one season run of the anthology series, STAGE 7. The series ran for 25 episodes during 1955. The headliner in this suspenseful episode is, Neville Brand.

In this one, a US Air force B-29 bomber is transporting a nuclear bomb out to the Pacific for a test program. Six hours out over the ocean the aircraft has a collision with an escorting fighter. The aircraft is damaged and just barely flyable. One man has been killed and another badly hurt.

The pilot, Neville Brand, turns the aircraft back towards California. He radios in what has happened and that he is returning to base. The people in charge on the mainland are not at all pleased to learn of the accident. The last thing they want is a damaged plane with a live a-bomb possibly crashing near populated areas.

The Commander, Jean Louis Heydt, asks Brand if the bomb is still armed. Brand cannot answer the question because the man badly injured, Gordon Mills, is the one in charge of arming or disarming the bomb.

Heydt orders the aircraft to turn around and head for the middle of the Pacific. They just cannot chance a bomb blast on the mainland. Brand does as ordered and feeds his crew a line that they are heading out to ditch near a Navy carrier.

Mills recovers a bit and Brand puts him to work disarming the bomb. They need to hurry as they are nearing the point of no return. The aircraft fuel is nearing the half load amount. Mills, though badly hurt, manages to disarm the nuke. Brand hauls the plane around again and heads back to the mainland. He radios Commander Heydt with the good news. Heydt quickly sends out rescue ships and planes just in case Brand does need to ditch his aircraft.

This one is a pretty intense episode with lots of suspense. Look close and you will see Strother Martin in an early role.
